Senate Approves Record Funding Increase for Alzheimer’s Research

In a recent press release, the Alzheimer’s Association publicized that the Senate Appropriations Committee sanctioned an unprecedented 60 percent increase in funding for Alzheimer’s disease research. The press release notes that the $350 million increase would be the largest in history if the proposal is passed into law. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, $586 million is currently allocated to Alzheimer’s disease, which is the only disease without a cure or method of prevention that is among the top 10 leading causes of death nationwide. The Alzheimer’s Accountability Act, passed with the 2015 funding bill, establishes a formal procedure that ensures scientific evidence determines Congressional decisions for future Alzheimer’s research. At the beginning of the 2017 fiscal year, the National Institutes of Health will start proposing annual Professional Judgment Budgets for Alzheimer’s research until 2025 in order to realize research objectives outlined in the National Alzheimer’s Plan.
