5 Seconds Of Summer’s Debut Album Is A Bestseller Again, A Decade Later

5 Seconds of Summer has been entertaining audiences for a decade now, a fact that may be difficult to swallow for many millennial fans. The pop-punk band released its debut album, a self-titled affair, in the summer of 2014, and since then, the group has been racking up hits and bestselling projects.

The band celebrated the tenth anniversary of 5 Seconds of Summer by releasing several different vinyl reissues of the record, including one that was bright red and another as a picture disc. Fans snapped them up, and all that love, which has continued for quite some time, helps the title return to the Billboard charts.

The self-titled project appears on two of Billboard’s albums-focused rankings this time around. It returns to one and debuts on another list that it's never managed to reach before.

5 Seconds of Summer opens inside the top 10 on the Vinyl Albums chart. The set is new at No. 5 on Billboard’s list of the top-selling releases on wax in America.

The band has sent five different releases to the Vinyl Albums chart, with all but one of them entering the highest tier for at least one turn. 5 Seconds of Summer is the lowest-ranking of the group’s four top 10, landing behind Sounds Good, Feels Good, which peaked at No. 3, and both Calm and 5SOS5, which missed out on running the show by just one space.

The same full-length also rebounds onto the Top Album Sales ranking, which isn’t focused on one style or one format, but instead, which paints a picture of the bestselling musical releases throughout the nation. On that roster, 5 Seconds of Summer returns at No. 13, almost managing one more turn inside the highest tier.

The self-titled debut project is one of 5 Seconds of Summer’s five No. 1s on the Top Album Sales chart. The group has collected an additional pair of top 10s, as well as one other release that didn't quite manage to appear inside the loftiest space, as the live recording, The Feeling of Falling Upwards, stalled at No. 35 in 2023.

Data from Luminate states that in the past tracking week, 5 Seconds of Summer sold just under 5,750 copies throughout the U.S. Those are pure purchases, not equivalent units, and the title likely performed significantly better when streams are taken into account as well. That figure is up more than 213% from the period before, when it managed a little over 1,800 purchases.'

2021 TAYLOR'S TREMENDOUS YEAR

With a staggering output of four chart-topping albums over the last 16 months, totaling nearly 100 songs, Republic's Taylor Swift will end 2021 with market-leading total activity north of 6.1m (she’ll finish the year somewhere around 6.5m) and six albums crossing 500k: evermore and Fearless (Taylor's Version) will be 1m+; folklore and Red (Taylor's Version) will be 800k+; and Lover and 1989 will surpass 500k.

The productivity, savvy and cultural influence demonstrated by the multiple Grammy winner (who took AOTY last year and is nominated in that category this year) has been, as far as we can tell, unprecedented. Nobody works harder—or smarter—than Swift.

From repeatedly posting record-setting vinyl sales weeks, to joining TikTok and rushing to rerecord a viral track to turning in the most memorable Saturday Night Live appearance in ages (see below), Swift has been in peak form all year. She also scored a #1 album with three different titles in 2021—which hasn't been done by a solo artist this century—held the #1 spot on the Top 50 five times and topped the song chart with the longest #1 since "American Pie," her 10-minute revision of "All Too Well."

KING SPAWN Sales Numbers Demolish The Avengers’ Record

The recent launch of Todd McFarlane’s new monthly comic book, King Spawn #1, has shattered sales records. With just under a half-million pre-orders by comic stores retailers, this marks the single largest new superhero monthly title launch in the comic book industry in the past 25 years based on the standard sales formula of the comic book industry (non-returnable, non-retailer exclusive sales).

Total pre-orders of 497K are bigger than any Marvel new monthly superhero launch, including Ironman, Hulk, Thor, or Captain America issue in the past quarter-century. McFarlane’s King Spawn #1 also topped any DC Comics new monthly title launch for the past two and a half decades, including Batman, Superman, Flash, or Wonder Woman.

No Avengers or Justice League character has debuted a monthly book with sales numbers like King Spawn #1 in the 21st century.

The Spawn character was first introduced in 1992, with the release of Spawn #1, to a record of 1.7 million copies that still stands today as the highest selling, creator-owned comic issue of all time. Published by Image Comics (the third largest comic publisher in North America behind Marvel and DC), the Spawn character also set a record as the longest running, creator-owned comic on the planet when issue #301 was published in 2019.

With its creator, McFarlane, announcing the expansion of a new “shared universe” at the beginning of this year, the initial title from that announcement, Spawn's Universe #1, hit stores in June to the largest sales from Image Comics since 1998. The first issue of King Spawn beat that number by two and a half times. This is an unprecedented level of sales for a character who has only been published in one book for the past three decades.

Spawn’s creator, Todd McFarlane, also owns the world’s record for most sales of a superhero book written and drawn by the same person, with Spider-Man #1 published by Marvel in the ’90s. During his time at Marvel, McFarlane was the visual creator of Venom, appearing in multiple titles and a successful movie for Sony’s film division.

McFarlane said, “The numbers that came in were much higher than what I had projected. With sales that now have a historical impact in our industry. It proves that the character Spawn and the world he lives in still resonates to fans almost thirty years after I first introduced him. But the biggest thing for me is having King Spawn becoming another example to the creative community that you can have creator-owned success outside of the two huge publishing giants, Marvel, and DC Comics. Every story that shows you can make a career on your own will hopefully inspire other talented people to try. As President of Image Comics, advocating for the creators has been our goal since its inception in 1992.”
