LAFC Nears MLS Single-Season Points Record

Last season, New York Red Bulls made history by tallying 71 points and breaking the single-season MLS record. Now LAFC has a chance to top that mark. The Black and Gold already claimed the 2019 Supporters’ Shield and are prepping for the playoffs. Sitting on 69 points, Vela’s squad can rewrite history if they beat the Colorado Rapids at home on Decision Day. Vela’s next strike could also set a new single-season goals record while helping LAFC set a new bar for all MLS teams.

Carlos Vela Chasing MLS Single-season Goals Record

We need to talk about Carlos Vela (yes, again). After the latest version of El Trafico last weekend, the LAFC superstar now has a total of 27 goals in 26 MLS matches this season. That makes him right on track to beat the single-season record of 31 goals set by Atlanta United’s Josef Martinez just last year. Another five goals in seven games remaining in the regular season will see the Mexican star unseat Martinez for the MLS all-time single-season record. Not only that, with a five-goal lead in the race for the 2019 MLS Golden Boot (both Josef Martinez and Zlatan Ibrahimovic are behind with 22 goals), Vela is expected to claim the award if he keeps finding the back of the net.

Carlos Vela to Break MLS Record

With a goal and two assists in a 4-2 victory over New York Red Bulls on Sunday night, LAFC’s Carlos Vela tied Sebastian Giovinco for the most combined goals and assists in a single MLS season. The former MLS MVP Giovinco recorded a combined 38 goals and assists in 2015 with Toronto FC. Now Vela with 23 goals and 15 assists through 24 games, needs only one goal or assist to set the new bar for MLS. The Mexican star will have 10 games left in the regular season not only to break the record, but add a lot to it; especially when he’s only five assists away from becoming the first 20/20 player in MLS history.
