Unsurprisingly I spent today pushing my new band saw to the limit. Making some rosette herringbone/barberpole striping. I was easily able to resaw some mahogany into veneers. I didn't have any 2mm left and I love being able to do it myself. Cut through the wood like butter. Also I think I'm going a little loopy from staring at these stripes. I keep finding myself accidentally doing the "magic eye" look at the repeating pattern. This tiny Delta bandsaw was the very first piece of woodworking equipment I ever bought more than ten years ago. It came with me all the way from Canada back to Ireland and it has been a very loyal friend. I've brought it back to life a few times, even machining replacement parts for it. But as I do with all my friends I've long wished to replace it with a taller and younger model. Today is the day! So excited to have a decent sized bandsaw now. I sprung for the Record Power Sabre 350 in the hopes that it'll outlive me. Look at the size of it. Taller than me! It's the most used power tool (sometimes the only power tool!) in most guitar workshops and I'm chomping at the bit to get stuck into cutting veneers and resawing whatever I can lay my hands on. When I was starting out the late Chris Larkin (a wonderful luthier based in Co. Kerry) advised me to process my own wood as it's the best way to ensure high quality results and the only way to use native Irish trees. I've got a little bit closer to that today. I can't wait to use this on the next guitar.
