Recycle, Revival

One of the biggest thing I've learned since I started wearing vintage is the beauty of slow fashion. I've learned to appreciate that I am better off buying investment pieces and nurturing them for years. I have to say that sometimes I go overboard and hoard things that I haven't really worn much - things that don't fit or things that I just haven't really fancy wearing. This beautiful dress is actually the latter. Some of you might have seen my Instagram post about how I used to fit into this dress back in 2013 - the year I had to quit work because of mental health issues. I was skinny and miserable and yeah I fit into this dress but that sure didn't make me happy. Happily I can now report that I can fit into this dress again but not by sacrificing my happiness or my mental health. Recycle and revival.

Since I started wearing vintage I find myself mending, altering and sending things to cobblers. I used to just replace bags when the straps broke or replace shoes when they look rather grubby. What a bad habit!!! I realise that even in the past 20 years fashion has changed even more dramatically and we just do not treasure our possessions as much as our mothers did. My mother has always been meticulous with her bags and shoes and she takes care of stuff very carefully. She doesn't shop much but she treasures every item. I know a lot of you are probably more like my mom than I am, but I definitely realise this is something I need to work on.

Truth be told I am chuffed to be able to fit into this dress again. Yes it definitely is tighter than it was 5 years ago, but I would never trade my happiness for a smaller waist. That's what What Katie Did is for, right? Embracing the fact that my body changes sometimes has given me the freedom to buy anything from 24-28" waist. I will wear whatever I feel like and whatever my body allows that day. It's kinda like yoga - sometimes you can do some poses easily and some days you struggle. Being kind to myself both physically and mentally has been my focus in the past few years, and this also translate into the way I wear clothes. And hey, some days you can fit into your cute salmon dress and sometimes you can't. Oh well...
