"With 3Souls Parallel Edition, you will discover the world of Mustland, a place full of rules and secrets... and its own people, the Ánimas, who are mysterious characters wearing a mask with them own soul floating around them." - Author's description
3Souls has gotten a considerable update on Nintendo Wii U, so I got in touch with Arturo Chavez Maza from indie Red Column to talk about this revamp.
4colorrebellion: Hi Arturo! Good to have you back at 4cr. How have you been?
Very busy! The last year I’ve focused on completing 3Souls, with some stress on the side with the Nintendo Switch gaining ground and the Wii U in its twilight months. But after a lot of work, we managed to finish our game without any issues!
4cr: On that note, we’re here to talk about the new update for 3Souls on the Nintendo Wii U. What can you tell us about it?
Last year we released part of 3Souls, which at the time was announced as an episodic release, starting with Episode 1: Nelesa. But as we worked on the other episodes, we returned to our original idea of doing one game with three chapters, so that all three chapters offered the complete experience. These changes were decided upon due to many factors, mainly the fact that the Nintendo Wii U is on its way out and that the Nintendo Switch was releasing in early 2017.
In the end, we spent the last year to give everyone the full experience by completing chapters 2 and 3 of 3Souls (Nophes and Nidemon, respectively). Each chapter has been designed to bring a bit of color, so to speak, to the soul of the main character for said chapter. At first, we had Nelesa, a sad soul which reflected on the melodic music, soft voice, and chalkboard traces, as well as on a melancholic story.
You now get to meet two new characters with very different souls. First up is Nophes, a happy soul, with colorful brushstrokes over canvas, and happiness that is reflected on the aforementioned elements. We then have Nidemon’s empty soul, an entity that feels nothing, and this is reflected in black and white pencil drawings over paper.
This is the core concept of the game which defines its characters and each of their stories, which we couldn’t convey with only Nelesa’s episode. Players will now get to experience the whole game and what we want to convey with its content.
4cr: Will there be an additional cost for downloading the game’s update?
Nope! It’s an automatic update that is free for everyone who owns 3Souls. At first, we had figured there would be a small extra cost for each episode, but we decided to abandon the episodic release so that everyone could enjoy Red Column’s first game in full – that has been our main priority over the last year.
4cr: Now that 3Souls is ready for Nintendo Wii U, have you considered porting the complete adventure to the Nintendo Switch?
Over the last year of development, we didn’t consider porting it to the Nintendo Switch since we wanted to deliver our original ideas for all players to enjoy, with a focus on the Wii U GamePad and the many options it has to offer. This would make porting the game a bit more complicated since we wanted to please our fans by allowing them to enjoy the game on Wii U in full and all the control options the GamePad has to offer.
Now that the game has been completed, the door to the Nintendo Switch is certainly open, although we’d need to work a lot on the game since we’d need to change many of the gameplay concepts, and we have no idea if it would be worth it in the end. Also, although we’ve enjoyed working on 3Souls, we’re definitely excited about moving onto new projects that allow us to continue growing as a studio.
4cr: Thank you for taking the time to do this interview. Is there something else you’d like to add?
Thank you for your time and support! I hope you enjoy 3Souls as much as we have enjoyed creating it. It has been a wonderful journey in which we’ve learned so much. If you’re still on the fence about buying the game, now is your chance because, to celebrate the release of the full game, we have temporally lowered the price of 3Souls to €0.90/ £0.80 / $0.97.
Once again, a big thanks to everyone who believed in our dream project! See you on our next journey.
