Most of the songs were local hits at the time, but have fallen off the edge of the earth to such an extent that few Canadians have ever heard any of them.

If the film A Star is Born were set in 1960s South Van, it would star Patty Surbey and Howie Vickers (nee Vickberg). The two singers are showcased in this 1966 CBC pop revue, Let’s Go, hosted by Vancouver radio icon Red Robinson. Surbey grew up in the Fraserview war vets project and attended David Thompson High. Vickers lived on Knight near 54th and went to John Oliver. They likely didn’t do a ton of drugs and there is no evidence that they dated one another, nor did either achieve stardom – so there goes the whole Star is Born analogy. Surbey sang a Christmas novelty song that should have charted, but didn’t. Vickers left the band The Collectors just before they became Chilliwack and enjoyed some success. But watch the video. These two had talent and spunk to spare. They get playful with one another at the segment’s 16:30 mark.
