Phil Hietanen was a talented photographer who grew up in Fraserview and passed away March 8, 2026. He got his first camera at age nine, built a darkroom in his bedroom and was able to buy more equipment when he got a job at McDonald's (Marine and Manitoba). He packed his camera everywhere – to Sir James Douglas Elementary, to David Thompson High School, on his cycling adventures to YVR, through the hippy encampment on Georgia at Dunsmuir – everywhere except Bobolink Park. The gang there would have mugged him for his Nikon. Rest in peace, Phil. Your images will continue to inform viewers for generations to come.
