October 16, 2017-Homecoming 2017 at Illinois State University kicked off with students celebrating school spirit while enjoying entertainment, a sundae bar, the announcement of the homecoming court, and performances by ISU dance teams. The day concluded with the Uptown Tree Lighting Ceremony in Uptown Normal where ISU President Larry Dietz and Town or Normal Mayor Chris Koos flipped the switch to light the trees throughout Uptown Normal. The celebration included performances by the Big Red Marching Machine, cheerleaders and dancers. Check out more photos from the events on Flickr. It was a weird feeling driving home from BloNo last night knowing I won't be coming back. Of course I'll visit but it'll never be the same. Thank you Illinois Stage and The Vidette for an amazing three years🎓🗞 #RedbirdProud #RB4L (at Illinois State Universty)
A huge thanks to @illinoisstateu and the Department of Chemistry for their hospitality! What a wonderful day for P and his wife Lyndy! #RedbirdProud #MP2Day #ISUChem50 #EdBird
The annual pre-commencement ceremony Umoja took place Thursday, May 5. It’s a celebration of African-American and other students of color, who, through unyielding determination, have successfully completed undergraduate and graduate degrees from ISU in 2016. We are #RedbirdProud of all the students who participated! See all photos from the Umoja ceremony on Flickr: https://flic.kr/s/aHskA2mcWX

STATE Your Major: Renewable Energy
Hey #FutureRedbird, did you know Illinois State University is home to the first renewable energy program in the nation? The program began in 2008 and has been preparing students for green careers ever since!
One of those students is ISU senior, Kadi Ilves. Her decision to become a renewable energy major began with a single concerning thought.
“I started thinking, why are these animals dying? And then I started thinking about global warming and why global warming is happening. Then I ended up thinking about energy and why we should stop burning fossil fuels,” Ilves said.
As fossils fuels are burned to make energy, it emits CO2, which is a cause of global warming. In the long run, renewable energy is better for our environment because it uses natural ways to make energy, like solar panels or wind mills.
Among the renewable energy classes students in this major take include economics to learn how the industry works, and a few science classes, like climate or physics. For all renewable energy majors, they are required to have a minor, so the wide variety of classes they are able to take allows them to test the waters on a variety of topics.
“Everyone can find something they’re interested in and then focus on that,” Ilves said. “If you want to do the technical aspect then you can go towards engineering and technology.”
A few of the career paths that students in this major follow are managerial positions, project developers, and designing or installing renewable energy systems. Ilves would like to go in another direction by working on the utilities side of renewable energy.
“I would be the person that makes sure the company is complying with the renewable energy policies,” Ilves said.
In order to get renewable energy students even more prepared for their careers after college, the program offers resources for internships. Currently, Ilves has an internship with the Office of Sustainability, located near the Bone Student Center.
“Our professors will find a few internships for us to apply to every semester,” Ilves said. “Since this major is smaller than others, we are able to get close to our professors and make a lot of connections.”
No matter what major you are joining, #FutureRedbird, Ilves’ recommends joining that major’s club or organization. By being active on campus, you will be able to meet students in your major that will help you get a good idea of what it is all about!
We are #RedBirdProud of our majors and we cannot for you to be as well!
Wow☺️🙏🏽 I was totally caught off guard today in class when our professor was interrupted by a group asking for Josh and they pulled out a giant check, announcing I was awarded the Iola Stoops Juarez Endowed Journalism Scholarship by the School of Com. Grateful for this scholarship and being recognized by the University and School of Com. I am proud and remain humble knowing how much our readership has grown over the past couple years and how much I've learned as a reporter and editor. The Vidette has done so much for me and I'm so thankful to be a part of such a great newspaper. #RB4L #ILSTU #RedbirdProud #VidetteProud #Thankful (at Fell Hall)
