Growing in the grassy mounds and cliffs of Orkney were clumps of Silene dioica (red campion, red catchfly). This short-lived perennial or biennial plant has downy stems and deep pink flowers.

The distinctive, vivid pink-red flowers of the British native wildflower Silene dioica (red campion, adder’s flower, Robin Hood, cuckoo flower). Flowers are dioecious, meaning the male and female flowers appear on separate plants, the five petals are fused at their base to form a tube surrounded by a purple-brown calyx. These short-lived perennials or biennials thrive with moist soil in lightly shaded areas of woodland, along hedgerows, in fields, ditches and on roadside verges.
