JAY PETERS INTERVIEWS REDDIT CEO STEVE HUFFMAN FOR THE VERGE
★
HUFFMAN: We offer the API so the vast majority of our use of the uses of the API — so not these, the other 98 percent of them that make tools, bots, enhancements for Reddit — that’s what the API is for.
It was never designed to support third-party apps. We let it exist. And I should take the blame for that, because I was the guy arguing for that for a long time. But I didn’t know — and this is my fault — the extent that they were profiting off of our API. That these were not charities.
The ones that actually are doing good for our users — RedReader, Dystopia, Luna — like actually adding real value at their own cost? We’ve exempted. We’ll carry that cost.
PETERS: I want to stop you for a second there. So you’re saying that Apollo, RIF, Sync, they don’t add value to Reddit?
HUFFMAN: Not as much as they take. No way.
Either you see the value of a great user experience or you don’t. No surprise that the CEO of a company whose website is so bad that they’ve had to keep the old one around as an alternative doesn’t see the value Apollo adds to the Reddit experience.

Reddit CEO admits changing posts made by Donald Trump fans
San Fransisco, Nov 25 Reddit’s Chief Executive Steve Huffman has admitted editing posts made about him by Donald Trump fans on the site after some users started insulting him for banning a community board dedicated to discussing a conspiracy theory involving Hillary Clinton.
BBC on Thursday quoted him as saying that rather than change the meaning of the posts, he simply redirected abuse targeted at him to the moderators of the r/the_donald thread.
His admission follows news that the site had banned a community board dedicated to discussing a conspiracy theory involving US Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.
The “Pizzagate” conspiracy alleged that Hillary and her campaign chief were involved in a child abuse ring operating out of a pizza restaurant in Washington DC.
The manager of the restaurant said he has been receiving death threats and has reached out to social networks to help him stop the conspiracy theory from spreading.
“It’s been a long week here trying to unwind the r/pizzagate stuff,” Huffman said in a post on Reddit.
“As much as we try to maintain a good relationship with you all, it does get old getting called a paedophile constantly.
“As the CEO, I shouldn’t play such games, and it’s all fixed now.”
He said colleagues were angry with his actions and he “most assuredly won’t do this again”.
Many Reddit members were furious that the website’s chief executive had edited messages, and accused him of censorship.
Huffman co-founded Reddit more than a decade ago.
He left to work on online travel service Hipmunk, before returning to Reddit as chief executive last year.

Reddit CEO in heap of trouble with users of popular Trump subreddit
Reddit CEO Steve Huffman is incurring the wrath of the contributors to a popular Donald Trump subreddit after admitting to modifying a number of obscenity-laden posts directed at him. His statement followed a series of events that were kicked off by a fake news story that essentially recycled a conspiracy theory started by 4Chan users. When users on the popular r/The_Donald subreddit caught wind of the removal of a thread dedicated to discussing the conspiracy theory, they weren’t happy. Some began bombarding the forum with abusive messages specifically targeting Huffman, which meant he was alerted every time a post mentioning him was shared on the site. The CEO apparently decided he wasn't going to take matters lying down. A moderator for r/The Donald alerted users to the fact that their posts had been changed. All the abusive posts directed at Huffman had allegedly been modified to include the names of the moderators of the Trump forum, bouncing the expletives back to them.
As much as we try to maintain a good relationship with you all, it does get old getting called a pedophile constantly. As the CEO, I shouldn't play such games, and it's all fixed now. Our community team is pretty pissed at me, so I most assuredly won't do this again.

It seems Huffman’s attempt at retribution has backfired. A number of r/The_Donald users showed little sympathy for his actions in their replies. Others raised questions over the credibility of Reddit, worrying that the censorship and alterations could be more widespread. Huffman isn't the first Reddit chief to draw the ire of the site's community. Last year, former CEO Ellen Pao was forced to resign after a petition calling for her removal received more than 200,000 signatures. Pao had overseen the shutdown of several subreddits accused of indulging in hateful "behavior." Huffman, who replaced Pao, is one of the co-founders of the site and served as its original CEO.
