Jess felt numb. Whether that was his emotional state or his physical reaction to the frigid conditions outside remained to be seen. His pants were soaked up to the knee and it was growing more and more difficult to make himself put one foot in front of the other. He couldn’t stop, however, not with only two hours until dawn and with three more pieces of a body in the sac over his shoulder that needed to be scattered. The bog was alive with the sounds of the night and it left his nerves even further frayed from jumping at every noise that seemed close to him.
Finally he finished his horrid task just as the first light began transforming the world around him from a pitch black hell to the slightly more visible waking nightmare he was used to. Despite the number of times he’d fallen into the water he still found his shirt covered in blood and he knew there was still work to do if he didn’t want to be arrested on sight back in town. He turned to make his way back towards civilization and froze when thought he’d caught movement out of the corner of his eye.
