Red Flower Lake Explores What it Feels Like to Feel Good in “Flying Dream”
Abel and Rahimah are the musical duo we’ve always needed. They are Red Flower Lake. The two lovers knew each other as elementary school children and began dating in high school. They bonded over their shared love for music and found their way as multi-instrumentalists themselves, filling their home with countless instruments and production equipment. Where Abel lends his music and sound engineering, Rahimah lends her beautiful and soulful voice.
Before 2019, whenever the couple would release music it would be released as Abel Okugawa but they often wondered what to call their duo. Red Flower Lake was the name Rahimah’s grandfather had given her when she was a baby in a traditional ceremony meeting. For as long as she can remember, she knew she would use this name as a prayerful honoring of the dream that was calling to her. When a friend and renowned artist requested they write music for a soundtrack and perform it live at the exhibit at the end of 2019, Abel and Rahimah formally solidified their musical union as the duo, Red Flower Lake – bringing renewed energy, curiosity, and inspiration as well as a deepened sense of purpose into their lifelong musical union.
Their new song “Flying Dream” is an experimental piece that explores what it really feels like to feel good in both our physical and mental states. With a strong Lana Del Ray and Ellie Golding vibe, it’s about what it would be like if we were all living our best lives. “We know that our best lives are interdependent - that they fit together in a beautiful balance of sacred geometry,” explains Rahimah. “‘Flying Dream’ gets real about this vision. What does it feel like to feel good? We know we can access the answers to this question through honoring, respecting, and feeling into our physical bodies and listening to the innate wisdom of our hearts. Are we willing to get real about what is on our hearts and be courageous and bold about our dreams? Are we willing to risk what is known and familiar for something new - maybe even outrageous - perhaps a dream of a life that is supported and full of love, inspiration, joy, curiosity, laughter, togetherness, and an abundance of gratitude? Our hearts and our bodies will guide us if only we will listen.”
