I think simultaneously the funniest and best way to fix the Purgatory Arc would be for Sam to have tried to get Dean out (because it makes no sense that he wouldn't and if anyone's finding a way it's him) and Dean shooing him away because he's not leaving without the angel. Sam at this point suspects something is up with Cas again but Dean won't hear a word about it. Benny would try to get Sam to help him out and Sam would get so annoyed (mostly at Dean) that he leaves them to it and moves in with Amelia (who was a therapist/marriage counselor Sam was consulting and fell for).
