Redlead roundhead (Leratiomyces ceres)

These roundheads were looking far slicker than you’d usually expect after a night of rain, still pooling in their uneven caps. It also served to wash off most of the white veil fragments, though you can still see a few scraps clinging to the edge of the caps. They would have dried to a far duller brick-red, which is especially attractive as their gills start to darken brownish-purple as the spores mature and release. These pretty fungi are mildly poisonous, and will cause an upset stomach if eaten.

This is Leratiomyces ceres, aka the redlead roundhead. It’s poisonous, but pretty! I often find it growing in woodchips - it’s saprotrophic and digests wood.

Redlead Roundhead - Leratiomyces ceres

Redlead Roundheads, Leratiomyces ceres (Strophariaceae), are attractive mushrooms distinctive by the cherry red or orange color of their caps. They can be found in North America, Europe, Australia and New Zealand, growing scattered or gregariously on wood chips or in sawdust, lawns, and gardens. 

Despite an attractive appearance, this inedible species is likely to cause an upset stomach if it is eaten.

A fantastic picture of a fantastic mushroom. This is Leratiomyces ceres (Agaricales - Strophariaceae), an attractive small mushroom with a bright red to orange cap.  

The Redlead Roundhead is common in wood chips but rare in natural woodlands. They can be found in America, Europe, Australia, New Zealand and elsewhere [1].

This attractive mushroom has become much more common now that parks and gardens are mulched with wood chip. Despite an attractive appearance, this inedible species is likely to cause an upset stomach if it is eaten [2]. These specimens were found growing in mulch in Booyong, New South Wales, Australia.
