“Yes, mother, I’m inside my apartment right now,” April lied into the phone as she walked down the street - this time without a load of bags on her shoulders. Her mother had been pressuring and badgering her about staying inside at nighttime ever since she had moved out two and a half years earlier, something that April always had disregarded. She couldn’t lock herself up every night when the streetlights came on, now could she? Besides - she was starving. And she definitely was no feeling the ramen she had tucked away in her kitchen. She hadn’t had the chance to get out and go grocery shopping for a while, so going to the nearest pop in restaurant was her only option.
“Lying? Why would I be lying to you?” She asked, scoffing slightly, just then a car sped by, honking it’s horn loudly, urging her mother to ask her for the umpteenth time if she was outside. “No, mom, I’m just watching a movie - I guess it’s a little louder than I thought.” She sped up her pace, trying to get to her apartment a little bit faster, all the while poking a plastic fork into the carryout container she carried, eating it along the way. “Listen mom, I’ve got a lot of stuff to catch up on, can I just talk to you later?” She asked, hanging up the phone as soon as she got a confirmation from the woman on the other end.
She went to turn a corner, only to jump in shock, nearly dropping her food. “Fuck, you scared the shit out of me!” She placed a hand against her chest, breathing heavily. “You know, people really shouldn’t go lurking around corners. Not really the best look,” she frowned at them.
