The diversity among the myconids in this concealed valley is amazing. While most of them have been friendly or indifferent to me, it should not have come as a surprise that some of them can be quite nasty. This week I came across an awakened myconid that seems related to the ubiquitous amanita muscaria. Unlike the amanitas I have encountered before, this myconid thrives on dead wood. The potent toxins make hungry creatures vulnerable to its psychic powers, taking control over them. Especially the local reindeers are obsessed with these mushrooms. But after just a teeny nibble, they go utterly psychotic. They even destroy the trees! Thus, they unwillingly feed the myconids. Their demeanor reminds me of the rumors I heard about deadly berserkers roaming these mountains. They are fearsome warriors with no restraint. Because of them, most travelers avoid this area. Do they know about this valley and the amanitas? I shall be extremely vigilant to avoid contact with them during my stay.
