As a kid, I would sometimes receive small red packets as Christmas presents. I still have some of those somewhere at home, actually. Now, I would receive these bigger sized red packets during Chinese New Year. Since it was not a culture I grew up with, even though giving and accepting red packets is for good luck or blessing, I end up just keeping them. Then I would use the money, and sometimes the red packet too, to attend weddings. In my head, it was like sharing the blessing to another person. "Red packet" direct translation is a gift given during Chinese New Year gathering or during wedding . It is usually given to children and unmarried members of families. There is a long story behind this tradition, originally the money was referred as "money warding off evil spirits" As a Malaysian Chinese, I ike to collect angpow. And I Still do( because still eligible) !! What to do with those money? I only understand the importance of teaching money skills to children ( adult as well) after I signed up teaching financial literacy.
