Red Road Flats was built due to the slum clearance after war, to create the more modern development of the city, large proportion of overcrowded slum housing in the inner city need to be demolished and replace by lower density housing and area to be further develop. with the brightness and hope of a better living quality. This modernist housing project is the consist of 8 30-storeys steel frame structure blocks, with the used of asbestos to strengthen the structure, and finely decorated interior.
By 1970, the buildings were well known as a place for anti social crime, starting from random teenagers throwing away things from the roofs or from their rooms. Until in 1977, some vandals caused a fire on the 23th floor, a 12 year old boy died, and it also caused serious damage to the structure. Since then many people has refuse to go back living inside the building. Later it became place for drug dealing, muggings and other serious crime, and also frequent spot for suicides.Then later, from the film, Red Road, 2006, elaborate what really happened inside. It shows how the environment became vandalized, how one react to another with the surrounding, and the downfall of the flats since residents are gradually move out. There was trash, graffiti and decadent happening mostly everywhere. In 2012, the first block was carefully and preciously cut down with the condition of rotating within 45 meters to the east, so they cut the complex steel column only on one side of the 10th floor.
