Darcy IS sometimes used as a flimsily-masked self-insert (lots of fics make her wildly, eye-rollingly OOC: sudden-computer-hacker!Darcy, engineer-all-along!Darcy and randomly-Tony-Stark's-daughter!Darcy all spring immediately to mind), and that's probably because she's easily one of the most relatable characters in the MCU for the average fanfic writer. That said, hating on in-character!Darcy just for being involved in m/f (or "getting in the way of" m/m) pairings is clearly misogyny.

I think there's a difference between self-insert and OOC - although there's a lot of scope for arguing about what constitutes OOC behaviour for someone we've so little of in canon - and of course sometimes Darcy will be written as one. (also computer-hacker!Darcy, IIRC, appeared in the pre-Dark World comic so that could be defined as a canon trait, depending on what you want to count as canon).

Where I took issue was with the original secret post implying that Darcy is only ever used as a self-insert, which is an accusation I've seen thrown around a lot in fandoms which have a lot of male characters/are dominated by m/m shipping. And as someone else pointed out in a reply to a previous post, Coulson got treated much the same way as Darcy in fandom (before Agents of SHIELD) and I have never seen anyone complain about that, despite the fact he was an underdeveloped as she was.

Give me all the female characters and give me them with the same standing in fandom as their male counterparts.

I too think you'd be a waterbender! Because I associate you with water (because of where you went to college and your ideal profession), you manage to be super awesome and independent and powerful after coming from a conservative influence in your home life, and, like has been said, you're very adaptable!

Cool! And yes, admittedly a lot of my education and career-focus has been rather oriented towards water, so that makes sense. (And you think I’m awesome? Independent? Powerful?! *blushes* Thank you, dear!)
