When you start a music review blog you don't really realize how difficult it can be at times. Most of the time its just light hearted fun but sometimes problems arises. For example how to review beautiful excellent well mixed and mastered great albums if you personally prefer crappy tracks that sounds like they are played through a shitty telephone line? Another difficult thing to review are the works of legendary underground artist like Mystified or RedSk. These people need no review or introduction, if you don't know them or any of their work than i would advice you to stop reading this blog and stick with the music of lady pooh pooh and dancing fossil Murdunna. They have been around in underground land way longer than me and i totally respect them. As this is a attempt to review a release by RedSk (encouraged by himself..) i will now try to focus completely on his work and why i praise it.
RedSK is everywhere and nowhere, he runs the home for many artists called TRASHFUCK, he is extremely creative, helps other artists out, gives kick ass live performances, does many splits with excellent results, is a family member of the "noise will be noise" label Proc Records and is next to all this just a cool guy that lives for the scene. His "i don't give a flying fuck what other people think of my music" attitude made me think that RedSK would be the last one in the word to care about a review. But as you can see, here we are with our twisted ears engaging in a real RedSK album. Wish me luck!
the first track is called "human heart in a frying pan" it starts with some beat and a psychopath singing to him self in a ultra good mood. this all takes just a couple of seconds as the obvious mad singing cook splashes a human heart in the frying pan. if you listen carefully you can actually hear the heart scream before it gets fried up. At the end the beat is back but the mad person got his mouth full of hot meat, so no more singing psychotically..
"8 +7" introduces a animalistic distorted beat that reminds me of some kind of cannibal group doing a ritual with the listener sitting in a pan observing it all. it ends with some crystal clear tones and perhaps that is the moment that we realize we are on the wrong side of the performance.
"africanbient" brings us straight to the mysterious jungle deep down in Africa. we hear music that captures the whole savanna in its glorious days. the tigers waking up, the lost zebra getting eaten by a group of lions and all other creatures waking up slowly for another day of survival.
The music is holy and spreads through the land from a place where wisdom and perhaps black magic are molded as one.
"Orgasmic Flagellation" is a exciting piece where the listener will feel slightly alienated. we hear machinery of destructive kinds that are trying to communicate with each other. they don't sound friendly, although their whaling sounds makes me feel emphatic for them. perhaps they are not evil possessed machines but misunderstood metallic creatures that just want to be friends..
Salvia Divinorum Bad Trip Time Travel recreates a monumental Salvia experience of excellent madness. suddenly our arms grow and the shrink again, our neck is one moment the length of a giraffe"s neck and than it is back to normal. everything moves, shrinks and get longer like a mad experience with a spaced out theme attached to it. like a real Salvia experience this hits you out of nowhere and takes the listener by total surprise into a whirlwind of short madness and mind altering hallucinations!
the next track is a excellent track of experimentation. we hear stuff going on in a distorted environment and it grooves. you know when things are good when you find yourself bouncing and interlocking with the triply mad rhythmic noise RedSK has created here. We hear some funky guitar in between but everything is molded in one rhythmic noise fest. heavy bass all in your face and cymbals are clashing for our pure delight. this is f@cking cool shit! and makes the listener move like the coolest alcoholic in town. This is fucking funky and reminds me of these fine wasted moments of total numbness after to much medicines.
the bass makes you move by it self and it is a pleasurable experience!
if there are more versions of "Xenophobic Old Timers (Version 1) " i would love to hear them!
"You Can Call That Shit Darts, Man (Feat. teh soup rebellion)" is a noisy game of fabulous shit darts between RedSk and teh soup rebellion. don"t think it sound like a casual game of shit darts, it sound like they have machines filled with cowshit collected from local farms and they shoot them with full force on each other, while in between throwing electronically wired dart arrows that are extra sharpened for the extra effect. sometimes a understandable word flips out between the collages of shit canons , but mostly they are completely focussed on the game. there are no losers or winners over here, as everyone is covered in shit and loving it. always good to hear musicians having a good time!
"DRM my balls" is a track of yet another different approach of music.
I believe that DRM my balls is a reference to drum n base. which is a genre that redSK (friendly as he is) shows a lovely middle finger! it is indeed a overrated genre and now probably all down the drain in music land. only grand mums and retarded old uncles listen to this crap nowadays. i believe they even have it on the speakers in elderly homes.. Why listen to dumbnbase (or its baby, duckstep..) if you can juggle your own balls while listening to the newest shit in town ;DRM my balls?
Besmeared With A Young Girl's Blood (Tribute To Grace Budd) is a lovely cute track that is perhaps a little bit short but satisfies all the things that needed to be satisfied.
It reminded me of a concert of Realicide i saw once.. a hardcore kick and punk vocals that go directly to the point of no return' . never has being besmeared with a young girls blood sounded so good!
RedSK vs. Dental Work - Bestial Breakwhore (Beastial Broken-Mouthed Bastards RMX) is up next and i can tell you this is great shit! bombastic stuff that sound like pure animalistic punks running lose with a nice touch of digital violence. we hear a moment of wishful thinking at the end. great stuff indeed!
the last track is a recording of a live performance where RedSk teams up with teh soup rebellion from around half an hour. This is great to hear as it is absolutely a mental performance to listen to. shit loads of things are happening, machines get rapped, high pitch flutes, feedback, banging guitars and basically pure mentalism! RedSK and teh soup rebellion are sure something to hear the best "live". Screaming out of nowhere and all the seemingly random noises are creating a atmosphere of animal sweat and what-the-fuckness. scraping sounds, electronic insects, banging bastards and when you totally not expect it a awesome all destructing rap kicks in! raping your ears away with the excellent flows and shit! after this we get another great surprise of noise that gets better and better. indian flutes, insanity, mental distortion are terrorizing the high frequencies!
RedSK and tes soup rebellion gives the concert go-er that didn't left the party a singing experience before entering some excellent sound improvisation. from alien sounds to weird folklore from some kind of spaced out and highly disturbed culture. we hear some cool blasting hip hop at the end and than the live set is over.. well actually it sounds like the venue went so wild, the venue owner asks RedSK and teh soup rebellion back on stage for more.. we hear them in search for a harmonica before the recording really ends.
So yes, what can i say? I am exhausted as this release was a intense experience. RedSK don't give you a second of rest and each and every track is a complete different approach of the man"s mind on audio. from the mysterious effect of africanbient till the haunting misunderstood machines, punk rap and rhythmic noise to improvisational folklore of pure ballistic delights. So much fucking things contained in this album that it really is something not to take lightly. RedSK proves that even though noise will be noise (a quote of Proc Records) there are so much thing to play around that keeps the noise interesting and the listener hooked by it twisted surprises. Tired perhaps, but sure as hell worth the ride if you are in the mood for the music of a contemporary artist with a raw soul that totally does whatever he wants to do! no shame no game! this is as real as it can get! rebellion and freedom of a wild mind on the lose! Respect!
