Is it bad that I think tumblr rather glorifies black culture? I get the distinct impression that it's already past showing it in a positive light. And I thought the Asian invasion made it very clear that it wasn't about diminishing the blackouts, but trying to stand in solidarity. That aside, I feel like the fact that the Asian invasion was ignored only perpetuates the fact that we're often ignored in real life, which is frustrating.
There are a few reasons for that I think. First, the black community is or populous on tumblr than the asian american community. I say specifically asian american because black tumblr doesn’t have to identify themselves as black american. The fact that we have had to add that identifier divides our community into those who identify as only asians and those who identify with asian american.
I am personally for black tumblr doing whatever it wants so long as it’s not hurting anyone else and all the black love on my dash hasn’t hurt me, so why start some shit you know? Do I wish that more asian americans would pop up on my dash that weren’t pictures of perfect models who all have bulging biceps? Sure. But I guess the issue of lack of representation is in some ways a privilege we asian americans have that black americans, who are targeted everyday, don’t get to have. Does it present an issue in and of itself? ‘Course it does because then our issues are invisible. But if Asian Invasion sought solidarity with black tumblr clearly the message was not received. And I always stand on intent does not equal effect. No matter how good the intentions are (and I can respect the intentions) the effect was was black tumblr became angry because maybe it came at the wrong time.
But I respectfully disagree with you when you say the Asian nvasion was ignored. Although the hashtag wasn’t used, it still got a lot of attention. The attention may not have all been positive, but it did bring to light the fact that our community faces non and misrepresentation as well. The social justice sphere clearly picked up on it and debates and discussions have been going on, but I think it’s mostly been under the table (as we Asians like to do things generally).
I think our time will come. But right now the black community has it a lil bit worst than us (understatement) so I’m willing to support them and if they so choose to support us when our movement comes that’s great. If not, our community has been taught to work twice as hard as anyone else to receive half as much all our lives anyway.
What I would give to be back in orgo. Don't complain haha
