A 𝙍𝙚𝙙 𝙎𝙥𝙞𝙩𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝘾𝙤𝙗𝙧𝙖 will project, or spray, its venom from small holes in its fangs, into the eyes of a predator, or prey to debilitate their victim. Their venom is slow acting if injected through a bite, and has no affect on skin, (unless it gets into an open wound) so their aim needs to be accurate! With the ability to “spit” up to 6 feet for up to 40 consecutive times, it rarely misses its target! The venom, containing neurotoxins and cytotoxins, burns the cornea, causing severe pain, chemical conjunctivitis and partial, or sometimes even permanent, blindness. 𝗦𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗠𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗮𝗰𝗵𝘂𝘀𝗲𝘁𝘁𝘀!! Scientists at UMASS, Dr. Bruce Young, Dr. Guido Westhoff and Melissa Boetig found that through motions of their neck and head the snakes spray venom in a geometric oval shape, in anticipation of a moving target, increasing their accuracy.
