So I know autistic people and people with ADHD have a lot of shared experiences. Is the flat affect one of them, or is that primarily an autism thing? I ask because I have a flat affect at times, but I'm certain I have ADHD and pretty sure I'm not autistic.
It’s actually associated with a number of conditions, so I wouldn’t be surprised of someone with ADHD could have it too.
Most commonly it’s seen in autistic, schizophrenic, depressed, and/or traumatized persons, or people with brain damage of some sort. Additionally, it can be a side effect of some psychiatric medications or, of course, muscular disorders in the face
It’s part of a group of symptoms known as “reduced affect display” that are about frequent lacking in displaying one’s emotions.
