The Superhero Movie: What Now From Here on?

One of my favourite movie reviewers discusses the current and future states of play for the current big thing that is filling cinema seats: The Superhero Action Movie.

I agreed with most of the points made, and the proposed future plans to keep these franchises relevant. However, as a casual movie-goer, I think that the action movie franchises these days are all about trying to chase that (possibly non-existent) bigger bang.

We’ve already had the intelligent action hero movie (Dark Knight trilogy) and the go-big-or-go-home movie (Avengers), so the biggest fear is that some stage, movie watchers have seen it all.

The Fifth Estate contains some worthwhile material, most of which is related to Benedict Cumberbatch's mesmerizing, multi-faceted performance. Since exploding on the scene in the BBC-TV series Sherlock, Cumberbatch has become typecast as an intellectually cold, emotionally stunted, off-kilter individual. It's a quality he has brought to most of his recent roles, including a turn as Khan in JJ Abrams' Star Trek into Darkness. Perhaps the reason is that Cumberbatch is so good at playing this type of personality. His skill is in evidence here; his interpretation of Julian Assange is that of a man who is many things at one time: mad prophet, sincere visionary, egomaniac, charismatic guru, narcissist. The Fifth Element's thriller aspects emerge from Assange's inflated sense of self-importance and his evolving paranoia.
