I want to learn chinese (at home) what's the first thing I should study?
hello! i’ve been learning chinese since i was (basically) a baby (being chinese myself) so i’ve never had a proper introduction, meaning that sentence structures and grammar came naturally (but there’s still room for improvement of course) so i actually don’t know and i provide horrible advice
if you’re asking for specific areas to start, maybe start with basic grammar (so you can string sentences together more easily) and obviously, vocab!
from experience with other languages (for self-learning - korean), starting with beginner’s textbooks is a major help, introduction posts on this site are amazing too!
the main textbooks (that i use/have used)
these textbooks + workbooks (chinese made easy) are very good because they have bits of grammar in them as well as texts/vocab! (i’m using book 5 at chinese school too!)
previously, we also used this textbook (and the 2 workbooks that came with) but (from memory - i think) all the text is in chinese
there were also another that i briefly recall from when i was first learning that focused on the 4 tones when speaking chinese which are so important, so definelty learn them!
helpful masterposts

i don’t personally watch them very often, but you can also try watching chinese tv shows/movies/dramas using subs and then without! i remember when i was small, i watched chinese cartoons (without subs bc it was chinese tv) with my grandma the mems which was not only fun, but also really helpful!
sorry that this might not have been as helpful as it could of! i just don’t have much experience with actually starting from the beginning (with no knowledge) if that makes sense! hope i did help though! :)
