glossary intro

disclaimer: okay finally writing up my glossary -- this is for my own reference. im RIGHT but dont fuckin ask me to defend this i’m too tired. you can dm me i guess but i’ll only respond if i think theres a point worth debating. i’ll substantiate with examples whenever relevant but this is a definitive guide of my interpretation. i am NOT tagging this because i don’t want anyone to fuckin see this besides the people i’ve told about this tumblr ok. will probably edit and update as i remember things.

anyway, classpect. system of character classification. it entails class + aspect and what it reflects is a characters core character traits. it is the nature before the nurture. your base character template before life experiences, personal quirks and everything else gets layered on on top. classpect generally determines a character’s impact on their environment and the people around them.

most clearly seen in fictional characters since a) their peak performance/impact is far more evident when looking at their personal development and character arc and b) physical impacts can be demonstrated through fiction in a way that doesn’t happen irl; besides literal magic powers (which don’t always map 100% cleanly anyway) thematically relevant motifs, life-changing plot events as well. more on that in the aspect section.

irl it often is most observable/confirmable in interpersonal impact, so you would look at their effect on the people around them –– what role do they fill in a group setting? how do people change from being in their presence? what energy do they bring to the social interaction? (on energy –– more on that in vibespecting) 

general disclaimers under the cut (i will not interact with people who don’t take these disclaimers to heart)

anyway classpect is fun and useful but a few general disclaimers for classpecting.:

- don’t take it too seriously. like, it is REAL and it is INTERESTING and it is very fun to read into, but don’t use classpect to prescribe what you think you need to be like, or as a basis to pass judgement on others. the later discussion will talk about flaws, and strengths, and general vibes. they all have a basis in truth obviously, or else i wouldn’t mention it, but some can be misread or exaggerated. in the past people have taken those definitions and used it to make themselves and others very, very miserable. it’s literally about superhero powers from a stupid webcomic. don’t take it so seriously.

- there is no room for interpretation here ok. there is a right and a wrong definition. this is not an area where room for disagreement is really possible, except in specific classpecting since that can take time to observe and really identify a person’s behaviour and impact. i’m open to improving my definitions and especially terminology, but just so you know. for my purposes i’m generally right. i’ve spent EIGHT YEARS (gross) hammering out my understanding. there are people out there who have very very different interpretations that i have gone through and disagreed with but i DO NOT have the time to dig that shit up. if you disagree with me massively please just go away

- no master classes. master classes are very cool in theory but they do not exist in real life. the whole point of the 12/12 classpect system is that it places all people on equal footing; no class or aspect is superior to the other. each classpect serves a DIFFERENT function and has strengths and weaknesses but each individual is equally valid and worthy of respect. not so for master classes. master classes explicitly exist as THE superior classes, of the active and passive roles respectively. they represent the ULTIMATE active and ULTIMATE passive, which inherently places them outside of the classpect system. master classes can be sparingly applied to supercharged supernatural/religious figures, and maybe i’ll discuss them briefly someday, though i don’t really care for them, but i will not be discussing them as a viable option wrt real people and to most fictional characters.

- no gendered classes. sorry if you missed the memo but gender is fakey fake. and “gendered classes” are bullshit. the only real effect of gendered classes is that certain classes are often associated with characters of a certain gender, abs that’s usually due to Sexism and Gender Roles, blech. generally the goal is to weed out gender stereotypes from characterisation when trying to use any of these examples as representative of their class.

Seer: Smart. Precise. Weird sort of quiet clarity.

Mage: Messy. Competent. Feels all over the place but in a quiet unnoticeable way. Sloppy?

Page: Bright. Young. Naive. Childlike. High energy like a tense mechanical whirring.

Knight: Anxious. High strung like a tense mechanical whirring. Tense and strong like grabbing someone by the collar.

Heir: Bright. Pure. Straightforward. Simple. Uncomplicated like a bright block of colour.

Witch: A punch in the gut. Bright. All-encompassing. Straightforward.

Sylph: Like fog in the corners of the frame. Tentative, sort of vine-like. Backhanded. Curling. “How do you catch a cloud and pin it down”.

Maid: Big, but understated. Like a flat expansive plane that is a distance away. Slightly tense. Quiet.

Rogue: Barely there. Chilled out. Like a transparent shell with only fog beneath. But not hard. Just Present.

Thief: Like a pointed lance. Sharp and intense. Like a lowered spear, off to the side but catching the light. Could draw blood but not right now.

Bard: Confused. Like a tumbleweed. Like an optical illusion where you can’t focus on more than one part of the picture at a time. Almost writhing but you can’t make it out clearly. Foggy.

Prince: Like a blast of lukewarm water to the face. Strong and pure. Encompassing.

Aspect

Breath: Pure. Bright. Energetic. Free. Darting. Light, floating. Whirling

Blood: Tense. Dark. Sweating. Clenched fists. Intense. Weighted. Like when you’re nervous and all you hear is pulsing in your ears.

Heart: Pure. Bright. Vivid. Colourful. Energetic. Present. Eager. Pink. Welcoming.

Mind: Distant. Cool like a hard surface. Feels fixed in place like a physical object. But far away and not heavy. Not precise or detailed but determinedly set.

Life: Somewhat present. Difficult to decipher. Feels settled but somehow impossible to view.

Doom: Distant. Fixed. Quiet. Not as fixed as you’d expect. A tinge of clarity. But just elusive enough.

Hope: Bright. Light. All over the place. Like the sun tickling your skin. Like a very gentle breeze in the early morning. What you think morning fog should feel like when you look at it.

Rage: Roiling. Intense. Deep. Slightly desperate. Like a whirlpool in a hot spring about to suck you under.

Light: Bright. Like a beam directly on your face. Like when you put on your glasses and everything is suddenly painfully clear. Saturated colour.

Void: Vague. Distant. Dark. Barely felt. Vanishing. Gentle. Present. Like darkness being chased away by encroaching light.

Space: Vivid. Big. Loud. Immediate. Like a big screen projector right in front of your face. Like a bright pastel room closed around you.

Time: Distant. Rumbling. Drifting. Like skipping stones in the distance. Almost placid but not really. A warm river that barely trickles.

classes as narrators:

pages are like. they narrate and overthink and ramble and then somehow still manage to speak without thinking.

princes are so overcome with the intensity of their emotion that they have to. moderate their own thoughts or it will be too much for them to cope with. or it will spill out ineffectually as pure venom

maids don’t think. they just. are not conscious of their feelings. they don’t have thoughts in the moment about what they’re doing. they can reflect on things in hindsight but even then the commentary is very minimal. they act more or less directly based on their impulses. in retrospect they can be more descriptive but tend to self censor a lot.

rogues are frustrating bc every thought that they have is fully pre-packaged. it’s like. here is the wildly emotionally dishonest thought i’m thinking. that is the end process result of the original emotion spinning through all 15 layers of my trauma. no i will not elaborate. they entirely skip over any commentary about their emotional process.

mages. they talk a lot of words but they don’t really think things through? it’s more like they act on pure impulse and then later try and explain it and they clearly haven’t processed why they did what they did and so it comes across as them lying or being in denial. like. just trying to guess why they did something. and trying to sound like they know what they’re doing. or know why they chose to do this particular thing

heirs are. boring. because there’s zero filter between thought-feeling-action

thieves are just heirs but with the one key feature. what makes a thief is specifically. having this fundamental belief in their entitlement. to a certain thing. instilled in them fundamentally, whether through external influence or just naturally. and their whole worldview is just altered by that because there’s just this belief that in a just world that thing belongs to them. and so for their whole narration it’s just this big Thing that their narration constantly just steps around when it’s like. you’re???not???entitled???to the thing??? trying to make them confront it is TRICKY because it breaks the thief. if they manage to accept that they’re not entitled to the thing. it resolves their trauma but it just breaks the character they become an heir

witches are frustrating as fuck to write. because it’s a very weird blend. they don’t really think that much in terms of Words but they are ALSO constantly brooding about their feelings. sometimes they’ll have a few things to say about their convictions. or conclusions. but the thought process doesn’t involve a lot of words. they are very Present in the moment

i don’t know how i would categorise sylphs as narrators. they are very helpful in that they do describe things and have very calm and defined opinions/observations about situations. ah i think similar to thieves the key feature is the blind spot. for sylphs being the absolutely certainty in their own impressions that is stubbornly resistant to self reflection.

seers are the literal opposite of mages where they actually HAVE thought things through and it can be frustrating how little they will reveal in the text. they comment very little but with full understanding of what is going on. so it’s actually interesting to have to dig into their narration for hints of what is going on internally and how much they ACTUALLY understand? unlike sylphs it’s not so much certain as just cautious?

knights. broody mcbroodface. knights don’t think they brood. maybe if they thought about things instead of just brooding then things would be easier. they just say a lot of bullshit and don’t really emotionally process any feelings or concerns they sort of sit there and rotate the feeling in their head until it spurs them into some (usually not well thought-out) action

a bard narrator is fun but also frustrating to pin down because bards are slippery characters. on a personality level bards seem incredibly average, except that their desires can change on a whim, prompted by almost anything. typically they are subconsciously following a trail towards their aspect, and they act without much consideration -- the outcome of their actions is the key thing to observe, because once you see the bardic effect, it's clear the purpose behind this action. it's crucial that the bard themself is not consciously choosing the path they're on; their actions continuously come from a place of no deeper thought. they can turn inward for self reflection, but that causes all of their momentum to screech to a halt.
