Types of campfires
It’s a Friday night & you decided to go for a weekend camping trip with your friends or family. Everybody expects a nice campfire when they go camping but you forgot how to start one. In this article we outline the different types of campfires you can use for different situations. For additional oomph you can also read on how to start a matchless fire.
Tepee Fire
Probably one of the easiest & basic campfire setup. It is occasionally used as a fire starter for larger , longer lasting camp fires. It’s also a great campfire if you only need it for boiling some water or taking a snack break. To start a tepee fire lay some twigs against each other until a mini tepee forms. Leave the center empty so you can put some tinder to start the fire. The heat from this campfire goes upwards so it’s good for hanging a stove above it.
Pyramid/Platform Fire
This type of campfire consists of a set of logs placed near each other as a base layer. A slightly shorter log is then placed on top & perpendicular of the base layer & so on. Each layer needs to be shorter than the previous one. Put the tinder on top so the fire moves downwards. This fire can provide quick warmth & is also sometimes used as a starter for larger fires.
Star Fire
It is very simple to start a star fire, just place around 6 logs in a star or wheel spoke position, then place some tinder in the middle & start the fire. This fire lasts for a long time & it’s perfect for cooking a small amount of food or boil water.
Reflector Fire
This type of campfire acts like a fireplace by pushing the heat in only one direction. See the problem with other campfires is that you have so much heat loss as the fire is not controlled in one direction, instead it pushes heat all over the place. A reflector Fire uses a backdrop to act like a fireplace & REFLECT the heat in only one direction. The backdrop can be made up of something that doesn’t burn like rocks, green logs or stone slabs. Once a good backdrop is found, start one of the fires mentioned above & lay in front of the fire for extra comfort.
