i understand that taking some focus away from illya was necessary but i’m so disappointed that they cut die lorelei - especially when so much time was spent on the herc fight. animation was incredible as usual but it began to drag for me.

yeah i understand it too and i think a lot of it had to do with the struggle of converting visual novel pacing to movie pacing... vn pacing is slow and fsn pacing is downright molasses, and ilya’s scenes and characterization are sort of dependent on the gradual, slow build that a vn’s format pacing allows. presage flower cut out a lot of ilya scenes for better pacing and it did work, but they couldn’t include all of them at once in lost butterfly without messing up the pacing and timeline there too so they sorta drove themselves into a corner. and that’s not even getting into just the struggle of fitting in a very dense vn into a movie.

i think they mostly had a good sense of what they needed to remove and most of the sacrifices they made were necessary, but the loss of die lorelei is a real blow. it does kinda make her character superfluous in the movie if we spend so little time actually getting to know her. her having less focus than in the vn is one thing but there’s barely anything going on in the movies. the aforementioned herc fight put a lot of emphasis on ilya too and their relationship, but it kinda rings holliow if it’s so undeveloped.

and yes it is kind of ridiculous how long the herc fight is and how its downright overblown, esp in comparison to the vn, but that’s also clearly ufo’s comfort zone and it was probably inevitable when there are so little fights in the vn during this part that they’d latch onto it.
