Ethan held his arm out to stop Charlotte from moving forward and pressed one finger to his lips. His blue eyes sparkled in the distant firelight and he took a step back into the treeline, leading his redhead companion with him. Once they were back under cover, he shook his head slightly and started to re-load his gun. 

“This way is blocked,” he said in a whisper so quiet that she could only hear it after weeks of practice. “We’re gonna have to try another path.”
