PERUVIAN AMAZON

One flight into Puerto Maldonado, 1-hour bus ride that only went 5 miles, and a 2-hour canoe ride down the Tambopata River, we finally arrived to our lodge in the Peruvian Amazon at Refugio Amazonas. Tambopata River feeds into the Amazon River and our guides said it is considered the start of the Amazon! We had four different excursions over two days and three nights that took us to a lake filled with piranhas, a bunker for bird watching, trudging through mud in search of mammals, and scaling a 30 meter canopy tower to view the top of the forest (where we saw a Harpy Eagle in its nest). Mosquitoes and spiders were no joke. Now we understand why people wear nets around the faces!
