“I came to America in 1981 from Taiwan. My wife and I were young and excited and we knew that even though we didn’t have anyone but each other, we would have a great life here. But it wasn’t easy. We went to a diner once to have some dinner, but they wouldn’t seat us, even though the restaurant was nearly empty. They said they didn’t have any open tables. We thought it was because we were Asian, and we probably weren’t that far off. So, we opened our own restaurant, a little Asian food place, and our happiest customers are white Americans. It obviously felt bad that they wouldn’t seat us at the diner, but at least now we can say that we have the life we came to America to find.”
