Regaleira Palace

Regaleira Palace is located in Sintra, Portugal. Wealthy Portuguese businessman Carvalho Monteiro constructed the palace in 1904-1910. The palace was originally a bright white, but has darkened to grey over time. Regaleira Palace was purchased in 1987 by a Japanese business, but it was reclaimed by the Sintra local government in 1997. The property boasts a neo-Gothic palace, a chapel, and a park that has lakes, grottoes, fountains, a gazebo, and two initiation wells. Much of the construction carries links to symbolism and alchemy, while the gardens were created to represent ancient secret orders. The wells weren’t used for water and were a type of inverted tower lined with stairs. They were used for Masonic ceremonial purposes said to be inspired by Dante’s “Divine Comedy.” The wells connected to a series of underground tunnels. The gothic, lavishly decorated palace is five stories high with the ground floor housing a dining room, living room, and billiards room, while the second and third floors house the bedrooms and offices. The upper level has an ironing room and a smaller room with access to the terrace, while the basement housed the male servants, the kitchen, and the storage rooms. A Roman Catholic chapel sits in front of the palace. Its interior is decorated with frescoes and stained glass windows. The chapel’s floor holds a depiction of the Order of Christ Cross, surrounded by pentagrams. Regaleira Palace is a World Heritage Site and is open to the public.
