Love and Murder in 1700's - Wicked Wednesdays

Love and Murder, a dark timeless theme. In today’s episode we jump back to American revolutionary times to look at three cases where the dark side of love combines with murder. 

1721 and Matthew Clarke, in want of money, slays a barmaid.  What made this crime so horrific is that he did it whilst kissing her. 

1791 and “legal chastisement” spills over to murder.  An interesting case that gives a window into life as a wife in 18th century England. 

1794 and a mistress of a landed gentleman has been dumped as he moves forward and weds another.  Now ruined and with no prospects in sight, Anne plots revenge. Three cases from the 1700’s where love and murder merge into one is today’s episode of Wicked Wednesdays.

Uncovering England's Worst Serial Killer: Jonathan Balls

News of the Times Episode 203 | 1846 Today’s episode of serial killer Saturdays reviews the case of Jonathan Balls from a small seaside village in 1846.  Jonathan is not particularly liked within the small village, but he seems close with his family.   Sadly though, a long list of unfortunate deaths dating back 20 years seems to blight his family in their village of no more than 300 people. As death after death occurs, pressure from the small community insist on and investigation and an exhumation takes place.  And then another exhumation.  And another. What unfolds is a series of murders eventually unveiling a possible kill count of 22 murders.   This famous case of the day was considered so extreme it was discussed in Whitehall and the Home Secretary of the time became personally involved. Stories of Burnt at the Stake: Wicked Wednesdays

In this episode of stories of burnt at the stake, we look at cases for petty treason: a murderous wife and her unfortunate husband with the accompanying punishment of being burnt at the stake. We start with the infamously barbaric crime by wild girl Catherine Hayes. We follow this with the story of Elizabeth Herring. Was the murder purposeful or accidental? And we end with the terrible murder of the husband in a love triangle and his brutal butchering. In all cases, the punishment was being burnt at the stake.
