Stephanie Mills - Never Knew Love Like This Before [1980]

Born Stephanie Dorthea Mills to Joseph and Christine Mills and raised in Bedford–Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, Mills sang gospel music as a child at Brooklyn's Cornerstone Baptist Church. Mills began her professional career at age nine, appearing in the Broadway musical Maggie Flynn. After winning Amateur Night at the Apollo Theater six weeks straight at age eleven, Mills went on to become the opening act for the Isley Brothers.

Mills's career took a rise when she portrayed Dorothy in the seven-time Tony Award winning Broadway musical The Wiz, an African-American adaptation of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. The song "Home" was first performed by Mills in the stage production and would be covered later by Diana Ross for the movie adaptation three years later.

"Never Knew Love Like This Before" is a 1980 song written and produced by songwriters James Mtume and Reggie Lucas for American R&B recording artist Stephanie Mills's fourth studio album Sweet Sensation (1980). According to Lucas's wife, Kay, the song was inspired by the birth of their baby daughter, Lisa.

24-year-old Madonna's self-titled debut album was released on 27 July 1983.

After the success of her debut single, "Everybody" (released in October 1982), Sire Records approved the recording sessions for an album with Reggie Lucas as producer.

Madonna was unhappy with the results (complaining that Lucas did not listen to her ideas) and brought in local DJ John "Jellybean" Benitez to remix the songs.

Madonna initially seemed like it would not find an audience, with few sales and not entering the US Billboard chart until September (at #190), but with the help of music videos sales remained steady and it kept moving up the charts, until reaching #8 in October 1984, by which time it had sold almost 3 million copies. It would go on to produce 5 singles (out of 8 songs on the album) and sell more than 5 million copies.
