It was too quiet in the Research Corner.
Long since had the rest of its earlier inhabitants exited, all with their own responsibilities. Of course, this left Pacifica to her thoughts, simultaneously yearning to be alone whilst also wanting to engage with the room’s only other occupant.
If you’d asked Pacifica maybe a year ago, she would refuse to even look at Gideon Gleeful, much less talk to him. The kid was a magnet for trouble, weaving everyone around his sinister finger. His little act was almost as unnatural as the white color of his hair.
She supposed it was only different now that they were united by the same awful circumstances. After all, it was rather difficult to maintain a grudge with someone you were constantly forced to march alongside. He’d also been different since Weirdmageddon - less creepy. Wise in a way that spoke beyond his years - even if he was still annoying.
He was staring at her now. Not in the manner she would have considered unsettling before, that she recognized. He was curious. Worried, almost.
But old habits died hard. Pacifica didn’t take well to being stared at. (Unless it was in adoration, of course. But she could tell - and was thankful for the fact - that Gideon didn't seem to swing that way.) She needed to say something, anything.
Her mouth spoke before her head could. “Is it bad to miss someone you’re in a complicated relationship with…?” She suddenly muttered, wringing her hands and trying to square her shoulders.
Gideon seemed to consider this for a long moment. He was genuinely processing what she had said and pausing to respond accordingly. “I don’t think so,” he replied simply, giving her an almost knowing look. Like he could tell who had captured her attention just by watching her. Pacifica didn’t like that look.
“Ugh! I’m hopeless.” She sighed, stuffing her head between her hands. Feelings really were the worst sometimes.
Gideon just frowned. “The way I see it, you kinda come off as the opposite of ‘bad’,” he offered, shrugging his shoulders.
Now it was Pacifica’s turn to do a double-take. “...What do you mean?” She ventured, peeking out from between her fingers.
“It just shows that ‘ya care. Not lots’a people have that much goin’ on for ‘em.” Gideon paused to stare down at the floor. “Caring may not always feel good, but it is good, y’know?”
She stared in slight unease. Just when did this kid - younger than her, even - get so intelligent?
He seemed to take her silence as a means to continue. Reiterate, even. “What I mean is, think about it. If Mabel was up and givin’ herself grief for feelin’ the same way you do, wouldn’t you try to get her to see it the way I do?”
Pacifica blinked, trying to ignore the blush that crept up her cheeks. “...Yeah. I would.” She couldn’t deny it was true, though she hated the logical take. She crossed her arms and turned away a little. “You’re…infuriatingly smart,” she grumbled.
The words seemed to cause something in Gideon’s expression to shift. “I don't think I’m smart, per se; I just know how to sound intelligent. Workin’ as a child star ‘ll do that to ‘ya.” He gave a casual shrug of his shoulders. “But the point is, I'm right for a reason, ain’t I? You really shouldn’t be goin’ and givin’ yourself a hard time over these things - especially if you’d support anyone else goin’ through the same.”
He’s out-witting me. Pacifica tried to ignore the surge of annoyance that often came from confrontation. “You just know I have a soft spot,” she huffed, shaking her head. “How do you read people so well, anyway? It’s kind of creepy. Not that it creeps me out, though.” She felt the need to clarify that part. Nothing scared Pacifica Northwest.
“I dunno. Maybe I ain't psychic no more, but those there kinds’a things tend to stick with you for a while,” Gideon suggested. “In fact, when I first got that old Amulet, I think I was too tuned into everyone’s feelins’. They were so loud, so angry - like one of ‘em hot, swelterin’ forest fires.” The memory seemed to stir something up in him, but he quickly pushed it down. “Anyway, you learn to tune ‘em out eventually; but part of ‘em stays, just as everythin’ does. Everyone else’s emotions become a part ‘a ‘ya.”
Pacifica could only stare for a good minute. She just couldn’t get a reading on him. He seemed so different. “I…guess it makes more sense than it should,” she conceded.
But something came to her. “Wait a minute. Just how did you know I had a soft spot for Mabel?!”
Gideon seemed to be trying to hide his amusement. “Eh…psychic?” He offered bashfully.
After receiving a glare, he elaborated. “C‘mon, anyone with a pair ‘a eyes can tell, Pacifica. The way you fret over her every move doesn’t help ‘yer case, either. But…” His eyes narrowed into something contemplative, but still amused and good-natured. “I do believe it may be mutual. That girl is just head-over-heels crazy for ‘ya.”
Pacifica stuttered, suddenly regretting this. She turned away in a vain attempt to hide her blushing face. “Mabel can’t like someone like me. She’s so, well…Pure. And I’m a Northwest!” Her voice is a bit higher than before. “You’re overanalyzing things.”
“Maybe I am. Or maybe you’re under-analyzin’ things.” Gideon phrased it as a mere suggestion as opposed to a statement. “Just think about it a ‘lil bit, won’t ya? Somethin‘ tells me she’s gonna be waitin’ on you to make the first move.”
Pacifica felt her cheeks burn a bit hotter as she peeked over at him. “What are you, some kind of love expert?”
To her surprise, Gideon actually laughed - a bittersweet sound more than anything. “Nah, not really. But a broken heart’s perspective is better than none, I do say.”
His gaze softened into something more sincere and encouraging as he offered her a thumbs-up. “Go for it, Pacifica.”
The words were oddly supportive - just what she needed to hear, though she would never admit that. “Next time I see her, I'll tell her. But if this ruins my friendship with her, I won’t be very happy.”
Gideon took the threat with surprising grace. Seriously, could this guy stop throwing her off her groove? “A’course. If it all goes to pot, go and throw me under the bus for it. Say it was my idea an’ all’at. I don’t mind.”
The offer, while unnecessary, was a sentiment Pacifica found herself appreciating more than she thought she would. “You know,” she started, changing the topic, “it’s actually kind of nice being around you now, Gideon.”
A pause. That same odd shift from before appeared on his face. He was quiet for several long seconds, staring as if holding something back, before nodding eventually. “It‘s real nice talkin’ with you, too,” he said, his voice carrying an undertone of something Pacifica couldn’t quite place. “You’re truly a pleasant person. I mean it.”
The longer the eventual silence stretched for, the more Pacifica found herself passively curious. He seemed to know what she needed to hear before she did. Maybe their similar upbringings led to the same unacknowledged desires; maybe Gideon was just more in-touch with that emotional aspect.
One thing was for sure: his words left her with a lot to think about.
