There was a possibility that she’d been spending too much time with Regulus, but they did have rather big blocks away from each other the last few days. She had work, and well she wasn’t entirely sure what he was doing during those times, but probably visiting Emmeline or maybe other members of the Order too. So, with that in mind, she didn’t feel all that bad heading back to check on Regulus after work that day. Paulie waved goodbye to Mary as they parted ways and started the trip to the safe house, apparating close enough to it that it was a short walk, but not too close as to alarm any charms protecting it. She didn’t need to disturb whoever kept track of the safe houses just because she was once again visiting Regulus.

Once at the front door, Paulie lifted her hand and gave a soft knock waiting for Regulus to open the door and let her in. She considered that he might not have been home, but it was nearing dinner time and she didn’t think he’d be going out. As the time ticked by she was beginning to think she had missed him, or he was sleeping. Maybe Mary would have invited him to dinner, no no, she’d just seen Mary and she would have probably mentioned it to her, probably would have invited her too. It could have been that she hadn’t knocked hard enough, that he’d been too far from the door to hear her. She reached out her hand again, knocking a little louder this time and considering that she should say something to let him know it’d been her and not a stranger. It was too late once she’d open her mouth to say something the door had already started to open, well, she could probably just continue it wasn’t like someone else was opening his door. “Hey Reg, I know we didn’t have plans today, but I haven’t really seen you too much recently and I just wanted to check on you.”

Augustus had always hated having meetings anywhere but Unspeakable. It was like a safety blanket, and every time he had to venture elsewhere for business, he had to make a conscious effort not to worry, to appear comfortable. And Kingfisher’s was worst of all for him. Mostly because of the ever present smell of fried fish, but definitely because he never really liked having to meet with Orion Black. It was easy to tell that he didn’t like having to do business with him; it was easy to tell that he regretted the fact that he wasn’t his father. Probably thought he was a bloody fool for even trying to do what his da had done. Neither of them really had a choice, though. They both needed the other’s work to keep going, or else things would go south quickly. He didn’t answer to anyone, but sometimes it did feel a bit like he was his boss rather than his business partner.

And so it was his job to come when Orion called.

It had taken all of his strength not to bring along Ambrose, but he had a strong feeling he’d be laughed out of the building if he came in with a tiny black pug in tow, and the last thing he needed was any more respect lost. He didn’t even entirely know the purpose of this meeting, but he wasn’t going to take any chances. Not with Orion.

He pushed through the front door of Kingfisher’s at midnight exactly, leaving one of his close associates outside, just in case. His maw’s black marble switchblade was tucked into the pocket of his leather jacket providing the false sense of security that he lacked without Ambrose. It was fine. Just a checkup meeting, nothing nearly as serious as what they usually had to speak about. It was easy to fake the certainty he wasn’t feeling as he stepped inside, stopping at the counter, head high, nose wrinkled over the smell of fish, but not too disapproving. Just the right amount of nonchalance.

He’d gotten good at this sort of thing over the past three years.
