Where to do it: Laguna Mountain

The Details: Find adventure at these beautiful mountains off of Freeway 8 to Sunrise Highway, with great landscapes and so many different trails and places to discover. There are also many campsites and lodges.

The Details: I recommend this place because its very close from home 405/605 fwy. It doesn't cost much. All the amenities are there. Surfing, swimming, SUP. The campground has fire pits, picnic table, showers, and some have ocean view. Most of all, its dog friendly campground. **No dogs on the beach.

An awesome Bay Area adventure recommendation (and love story) from the awesome REI staff!

Where to do it: Mt. Tamalpais

The Details: 3 weeks ago my fiance proposed at the very top of Mt. Tam! It was such an incredible day and the beautiful hike and views of the Bay area from the top made it even more magical! You can drive to the top of Mt. Tam and hike about 1/3 mile to the lookout, but we decided to enjoy the beauty and get a great workout in at the same time. The hike we chose was about 6 miles round trip. We started our hike off of Panoramic Highway just behind the fire station. We hiked up to West Point Inn via the Old Railroad Grade Trail. From there we took the Fern Creek Trail (fairly steep) and up to the top of Mt. Tam. We enjoyed a nice picnic in the parking lot before trekking the remainder of the way to the top. Once on the top, there are panoramic views of the Bay Area including Sausalito, Marin County, East Bay, Angel Island and San Francisco. There are numerous trail hikes on Mt. Tam depending on one's hiking ability and level. This will for sure always be the most memorable hike of my lifetime!

Where to do it: Desolation Wilderness

Desolation wilderness is located west of Lake Tahoe and is the home of many alpine lakes and waterfalls. One in particular and my favorite is Lake Aloha. I have hiked here in winter and backpacked in summer. 

Mount Tallac is very close and makes an excellent day hike if you prefer to car camp.

Where to do it: Bolsa Chica Wetlands

Bolsa Chica Wetlands allow for super easy access from Huntington Beach or the Pacific Coast Highway for a short hike or quick run. There are always lots of birds and rabbits. I've even seen coyotes and snakes. I recommend this place for the ocean views and the historical remnants of different buildings that were on the grounds, including a World War II era gun turret.

Where to do it: Mono Lake

We went on an interpretive kayak tour of  gorgeous Mono Lake with Caldera Kayaks. Stuart, our guide, gave a great tour. We saw nesting owls, lots of migratory birds, and learned about the natural history of the Mono Lake. The kayaks were awesome - sliced beautifully through the water.  Great activity for all ages. If you are traveling from the south gate of Yosemite, stop at the Mobil Gas Station at the Whoa Nellie Deli  (just west of the intersection with Highway 395) - fish tacos with mango salsa are the best.  And there is live music on the weekends.
