Restlessness hit him like a truck. The feeling he should be something more with his life was always with him, every since he got off the ice, it became stronger and stronger and coming to Catalina, making a new life for himself did nothing to curb it. The coffee shop had kept him busy enough, constantly moving around, talking to customers exhausted him physically and mentally and that was a sweet feeling. Falling into bed and drifting into a dreamless sleep, he couldn’t ask for more. But of course with routine came familiarity, and with that came the unwanted thoughts. The place, the job, it was comfortable, but it was too comfortable. He knew the ins and outs, he had regulars that he made the order for without even giving the setting of the machine a second glance, it all became muscle memory something he didn’t without thinking. All the space in his mind had to filled with something right?
It had been a ordinary morning that dissolved into an ordinary afternoon, Ethan was fishing out for spare coins he knew he had somewhere when he came across a card he had shoved into his wallet with a second thought. The second thoughts came now. As he turned the card over through his fingers, the memory came back. He vaguely remembered that conversation, but the proposal that was offered was clear as day. This would be something new to occupy his mind.
What the hell, he thought, turning sharply he made his way to the restaurant. It wasn’t hard to miss it. It was grand in every sense, to think this was a simple family was extremely hard to believe. He didn’t stop to take in the scenery though, he simply wanted to know if she still stood by her offer.
“Welcome! Will you be dining with Iris or Eve?” he was greeted upon, with the most customer smile he had ever seen, that made him want to laugh.
“...who? I’m just here to see Reina Rhodes.”
Her smile faltered a touch, clearly she wasn’t expecting that. “Is she expecting you?”
“Uh....no? maybe? It was a month ago...she did give me her card though,” Ethan said holding out the tattered piece of cardboard. The waitress didn’t look terribly impressed, but she disappeared between the thick curtains anyway leaving him to do nothing but look around except he didn’t do much of that, eyes fixated on the card still in hands, he tried to get his thoughts in order and rehearsed what to say when he finally took up a month old offer.
