Can we just give Nightshade some love? (WARNING: TRANSPHOBIA, QUEERPHOBIA)

sooooo awhile ago a new transformers show came out called Transformers: EARTHSPARK. A brand new show with new and old transformers. One of these new transformers is called Nightshade. For those who are not familiar with transformers (which is most of my mutuals probably), Nightshade is a non binary transformer, the first in the franchise to be exact. On many occasions Nightshade introduces themself as “they/them” to everyone they meet (ie optimus, tarantulas, and that one girl), Unfortunately, a few months after the episode aired and right around the time Rise of the beasts came out news outlets such as FOX news and many transformers “fans” had a ton of negative and hateful things to say. If you’re a queer person you probably already know the ding dang deal with their takes. “They're pushing the gay agenda to your kids!” “It’s a robot it shouldn’t have pronouns!” You’ve probably heard these sayings many times before.

now, the issue with nightshade in particular is that every-time I want to look them up on YouTube so I can see stuff like clips and toy reviews, I have to avoid all of the hate videos talking about the “woke mind virus” and then after THAT, I have to avoid all of the hate comments that are seemingly under EVERY SINGLE VIDEO relating to them. The hate for nightshade is so insane, mainly because there is no real fan base to back them up. I find it’s ridiculous and disgusting how so many transformers “fans” (let’s be real, bayformers exclusive fans) are openly against queerness in their community. I, myself am Non binary, and young. In the target demographic for transformers. Whenever I watch earthspark and see Nightshade, I feel seen. Hell pretty much every non binary character I know I can relate to in some way, mostly when they openly talk about being non binary. The biggest example I have is Paintbrush from inanimate insanity, who has an entire moment were they come out to a friend and state their identity to yin yang. As “cringe” as it may look to people to see someone openly saying “I am nonbinary, my pronouns are they/them”, I often don’t have the confidence to say it myself, hell I haven’t told anyone at my high school except for my new friend my pronouns, and I’ve been “openly” nonbinary for years at this point. Seeing other characters in media, no matter how slim the amount or rep is, gives me confidence in myself to state a basic respect to other people. Nightshade makes me feel seen and represented and all I want is more love for nightshade. They have no love and transformers fans need to give them some. In the words of Optimus prime, “freedom and autonomy are the right to all sentient beings”. I can’t believe it’s flies over the heads for so many fans

but then, you open the comments.

GENUINELY, WHAT THE FUCK?!

“Oh Brain juice how can you be homophobic 😭💔” NO! This is actually NOT about homophobia. Bee fucking bumblelive me as a gay and trans person myself. It’s that fact that SO many people GENUINELY believe a ship dynamic is “BeTtEr” if it’s gay/ queer coded. It makes me super uncomfortable that ppl were in the comments basically bashing this ship for being “basic straight white ppl couple 🙄” only for some commenter to come in like “okay, but what if it was gay 😝?” And suddenly “OMG!!! THAT WOULD BE SO CUTE HAHA 😍!” Like no????? I’ve actually noticed this in a lot of fandom spaces I’ve been in like Hellaverse. MLM ships like Stolitz or Huskerdust are genuinely abusive/ high key sexual harassment but it’s seen as “cute yoai hehe 😘” when if husk or Blitz were women people would be calling out how fucked up these ships are and how toxic they are. But no, they get a pass because it’s gay. So many ppl on this pin are like “oh it’s better if it’s gay!” Or “oh it’s better if the roles were reversed!!!” Stfu. How is a dynamic better to you when it’s suddenly queer coded. Am I the only one who finds that to be weird??? It’s so odd. Again it makes me uncomfortable how so many people think ships are better when they’re queer. I know this is definitely a result of a lack or rep in the media but that doesn’t make it okay to bully straight ships/ think only queer ships are interesting. Can anyone let me know if they find this weird like I can’t be alone right?

i srsly want to leave the kpop fandom so bad. it seems like everyone’s racist or defends racism it’s so dumb. all kpop fans are racist koreaboos i swear. as a korean, i know that we are ignorant and often make offensive comments, and bc all these stans are so obsessed with koreans they just excuse it like it’s no big deal. the difference is, in my experience if you explain and tell a korean that something they said was racist, they’ll be like oh yeah i see that i’m sorry but these american stans that fetishize korean culture, know it’s rude and wrong but they still defend it. and it’s always black culture/people! like why are korea and all these kpop stans so anti-black. i don’t want to overpower actual black voices, but i feel like everyone is like wow they’re sensitive black women like jfjffsabf. and not only that they act like how dare we call this appropriation or offensive comment racist, like how dare it BE racist. how dare you defend it. you as a non-black person have no right to decide what is or isn’t offensive. there ARE black people who are hurt by this and not only that, you don’t have to be black to see that racism is racism. even some people who are black are like “this doesn’t offend me” so??? there are some who it does so defend it for them like it doesn’t affect me but i still realize it is hurting black people. except sometimes i feel like i’m saying too much, but literally everyone in kpop is racist???? its 2018 and mocking black people for being black is racist is controversial, fuck kpop.

So, Megan and I have been watching a lot of movies lately.

And we've been on sort of a magic-kick.

I mean, we've been trying to watch movies that have magic as a central focus in them, particularly wizards, and we've been trying to stay away from movies that we've seen a hundred times before (so, no Harry Potter, no Lord of the Rings, etc.)

As such, we've ended up watching a slew of... really mediocre films.  The most frustrating, though, has been I think The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus.

So the thing is, that neither of us had seen this particular movie before, and so we didn't know much about it other than that it hadn't done particularly well in the box office, but hey- that doesn't really mean anything; what's good is not always popular, and vice versa.  We also knew that Parnassus had the slight handicap of Ledger dying halfway through filming.  They were able to work that into the film though, and in a very Whovian way had the character played by multiple actors in a way that actually fit in with the story.

And I'll say this about Parnassus: it was certainly... creative.  Visually it was gorgeous, it had a top-notch cast and some really original ideas going for and some extremely clever dialogue.

It's just that the plot was an absolute mess.

And, sure, I understand that it was an artsy film, and that it wanted the audience to work a little bit in order to "get" it, and that True Art Is Inaccessible and all that.  And you know, I generally rather like media that makes me work a bit for it; I don't mind having to think a little bit in order to understand the message that's being conveyed.  The thing is, I don't necessarily want to become a goddamn detective just to understand a movie.  And the other thing is- the more important thing, really- is that even after Megan and I put on our deerstalkers and sat down and figured out What Is Actually Going On In This Film, there was no real payoff for us as viewers.  Instead of some deeper revelation or insight in to the human condition, as we might have expected from such a film, all we got was 'Welp- some people are so awful that even the devil doesn't like them.'

I suppose what frustrates me the most is really that there were so many well done elements to this film, and that it could have been really quite fantastic- if only it had had an editor.  Well, a better editor.  Someone to clap Terry Gilliam on the shoulder and say 'Hey man, this is a GREAT first draft.  Now let's rework some parts....'
