Indian Gas Exchange delivered transactions: RGPL pipeline integration expands market access
India's gas trading ecosystem has taken another important step towards market-based pricing with the launch of Indian Gas Exchange delivered transactions on Reliance Gas Pipelines Limited's Shahdol-Phulpur network. Under the newly executed Framework Gas Transmission Agreement, buyers connected to the RGPL pipeline can now purchase natural gas directly through the Indian Gas Exchange while transportation, delivery and settlement are managed by the exchange itself. Indian Petroplus analysis believes this development significantly lowers entry barriers for industrial consumers by eliminating the need for separate pipeline transportation agreements before participating in Indian Gas Exchange delivered transactions.
The integration is expected to improve utilisation of the Shahdol-Phulpur pipeline, which has historically operated below its installed capacity despite serving Reliance Industries' coal bed methane production. By opening the network to exchange-based deliveries, spare transmission capacity can now be monetised while expanding transparent price discovery across central and northern India. Smaller industrial consumers located along the pipeline corridor are likely to benefit from easier access to exchange-traded gas through simplified commercial arrangements.
Beyond the immediate commercial benefits, the agreement also demonstrates how private pipeline infrastructure can support India's evolving competitive gas market under the common-carrier framework. Indian Petroplus analysis expects additional pipeline operators to adopt similar transmission agreements with the exchange, strengthening liquidity and creating a wider network for physical gas trading.
