Indian Gas Exchange volumes: June decline hides stronger structural gas market
Indian Gas Exchange volumes fell 23.87% month-on-month in June 2026, creating the impression that India's spot gas market has entered a weak phase. However, the broader data tells a different story. June trading reached 8.19 million MMBtu through 171 trades, while year-on-year volumes more than doubled by 103.38%. Quarterly volumes for Q1 FY27 also climbed sharply to 27.48 million MMBtu, reflecting continued structural growth. Indian Petroplus analysis suggests that the June decline should not be viewed in isolation because it reflects seasonal demand moderation rather than any deterioration in market fundamentals. The real market signal lies in sustained growth across longer timeframes rather than a single month's comparison.
The pricing environment provides an equally important explanation. The GIXI benchmark remained around Rs 1,767 per MMBtu, almost unchanged from May but nearly 79% higher than a year earlier due to the continuing impact of the Hormuz crisis and tighter LNG supply. Elevated prices have gradually reduced discretionary spot purchases after several months of sustained cost pressure rather than causing an immediate collapse in demand. The onset of the monsoon has also reduced gas-fired power generation, adding a seasonal factor to lower monthly trading activity.
A closer look at the trading mix further supports this interpretation. Nearly half the exchange volume continued to come from regulated domestic gas supplied to city gas distributors for CNG and PNG demand, while the balance represented price-sensitive market gas. Indian Gas Exchange volumes, gas trading India, and Hormuz gas prices therefore indicate a market experiencing temporary seasonal moderation rather than structural weakness. Indian Petroplus analysis believes the longer-term growth trajectory of India's gas exchange remains intact despite June's headline decline, Indian Gas Exchange, IGX volumes, Gas trading India, LNG prices, Hormuz crisis, Natural gas market.
