Q:"why do we swear on bibles anyway?" A: In most places, there is no holy book any more. In places, where there still is, you swear on the text of the religion you subscribe to (the Bible, the Torah, The Qur'an, the Tipitaka, etc)... And atheists (or anyone really) can elect to affirm instead of swear, thereby removing all deities and holy scriptures from the procedure... it's just the media that only ever portrays it as a Bible so everyone assumes that's the only option.
ooh that’s really interesting, thanks! yeah, i figured that that’s super dumb cos they doonly show bibles and i’m like okay what if the testifying witness is muslim or something, or what if i testify (or want to run for president or something) and do i get to do whatever i want since i’m atheist, haha. but that’s super cool, thanks for the knowledge i’ve actually wondered this for awhile!
