Another 5 activists arrested, remanded for 2 days

KOTA KINABALU, Feb 8, 2015:

Five activists, including two grandmothers, will be spending the next 48 hours behind bars at the Lahad Datu police lock-up on suspicion of being linked to the Sabah Sarawak Keluar Malaysia (SSKM) group.

They are aged between 22 and 59.

Sabah Progressive Party president Datuk Seri Yong Teck Lee, who came to their rescue and acted as their lawyer, said the five were refuelling at a petrol station in Tungku in Lahad Datu when police, in three patrol cars, arrested them on Saturday evening.

“Apparently these police cars had been tailing them since they arrived in Lahad Datu a couple of days ago.

“I was told that they went to Lahad Datu to meet some people, but I am not so sure for what purpose,” said Yong when contacted by The Rakyat Post today.

He, however, questioned the reason for the five people’s arrest, adding: “It was not like they were distributing pamphlets or signing petition at the time. They were at a petrol kiosk filling up the car.”

Yong said when he first met them, all of them were handcuffed, with the two elderly women handcuffed to each other.

“They were treated like criminals. All five, who have been linked to the so-called secession group, appeared tired, it was so pitiful,” he said, adding that the handcuffs were taken off when they were brought before the magistrate today for a remand order.

Police had requested for four days, but the court only granted two days, their remand ending on Feb 10.

“We were told by the police that Inspector-General of Police (Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar) and Sabah Police Commissioner (Datuk Jalaluddin Abdul Rahman) wanted the five remanded to assist investigations under the Sedition Act and Printing Act,” said Yong, adding that apart from the car, police also seized a few T-shirts with the “Hormati Perjanjian Malaysia” written on it, and leaflets.

A group of people had gathered outside the Lahad Datu police station, holding placards, demanding for the release of the five people.

A similar gathering was also carried out in Kota Marudu, to show solidarity with their detained comrades.

This is the second arrest involving activists.

The first was last Sunday, where nine people were arrested while soliciting signatures for a petition seeking the secession of Sabah at the weekly tamu (open market) in Tuaran about 10am.

Aged between 24 and 50, they were released on RM2,000 police bail in the evening.

To date, police have yet to officially make a statement on the latest arrest.

UPSR leak: Four men remanded to assist investigations

PUTRAJAYA, September 15, 2014:

Police have obtained a four-day remand order against four men, including a school headmaster and two teachers to assist investigation over leaks in the Science and English papers in this year’s Primary School Achievement Test (UPSR).

Magistrate Nur Dahlia Azmi issued the remand order which was to begin today until Thursday on the men, aged between 30 and 50 years for investigation under Section 8 (1) of the Official Secrets Act (OSA) 1972.

The headmaster and the teachers were from two different schools in Penang while the other man was an insurance agent.

Section 8 (1) of the act states that if any one person having in possession or control of any official secret or any secret official code word, countersign or password and communicates directly or indirectly any such information to any person other than a person to whom he is duly authorised to communicate, shall be guilty of an offence punishable with imprisonment for a term not less than one year and not exceeding seven years.

The men were represented by lawyer Ester Tan Siew Choo who said the police applied for a seven-day remand but the magistrate gave only four days.

Following the leaks in the Science 018, 028 and 038 and English 014/1 and 014/2 papers last Thursday, almost half a million UPSR students now have to resit the papers on Sept 30.

The fiasco sparked outrage among parents and students.

Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, who is also Education Minister had announced on Friday that Examinations Syndicate director Dr Na’imah Ishak and its deputy director of operations Dr Wan Ilias Wan Salleh had been suspended with immediate effect pending investigations into the fiasco.
