10 Ways to Honor Janis Joplin – 44 Year Anniversary
http://www.westhollywood.andaz.com
44 years ago tomorrow, Janis Joplin passed away in Los Angeles at the age of 27. She had two obvious talents; her raspy and gutsy voice which still manages to manifest a case of stank face and "the feels;" and her valiant spirit that'll make your grandmother throw the sign of the horns with her hands.
While she died alone in her hotel room (#105), we join many a rock history devotee around the world to pay tribute to the original Queen of Rock – and if Janis holds a little piece of your heart, here are 10 ways you can join the party:
1. Visit Barney's Beanery in West Hollywood. Janis had drinks with her bandmate at Barney's Beanery before going back to her hotel and... well, the rest is history. Janis carved her name on a wooden tabletop at Barney’s; it now hangs from the ceiling inside the restaurant. https://www.flickr.com/photos/lookingforjanis/6337477966/

2. Take a stroll down Franklin Avenue. The Highland Gardens Hotel (next to the Magic Castle) is where Janis’ body was discovered in room #105, back then it was called The Landmark Motel. Rumor has it that Don Hoyt, a personal friend of Janis rents the room every year on the week of October 4th to celebrate her passing.

4. Rent “The Rose” (1979) -- The movie stars Bette Midler, her role is inspired by Janis. Last we heard this was out of print so you'll have to find one of the few surviving video rental shops. In West Hollywood, we have Video West. Angelenos, San Franciscans and the fine people of Berkley can visit Amoeba Music where you can find… well, EVERYTHING. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0079826

5. Have a shot of Southern Comfort and toast to good ol' Pearl. Southern Comfort was Janis' drink of choice.

10. Get a tattoo. Janis had a symbol on her wrist and a little heart on her breast; both were by tattoo artist Lyle Tuttle. Janis explained, “I wanted some decoration. See, the one on my wrist is for everybody; the one on my tit is for me and my friends.” She paused and chuckled, “Just a little treat for the boys, like icing on the cake.”
