Removing a tattoo is a lengthy process. Some people can tolerate R20, which is when a doctor makes multiple passes over a tattoo with a laser in 1 day, usually with 20 minutes in between each pass. It can be painful and isn’t guaranteed to work better than traditional single-pass tattoo removal (limited studies have been done on the effectiveness of R20), but R20 increases your odds of fully removing your tattoo within a few months.

Normally, a doctor only makes 1 pass with the laser during each laser tattoo removal session, and you have to wait at least 6 weeks in between sessions to prevent your skin from being damaged. It can take 8-15 sessions to fully remove a professional tattoo (amateur tattoos take far fewer sessions to remove because they’re typically not inked as deeply as professional tattoos). With 6 weeks in between each session, it could take more than a year to fully remove a professionally done tattoo if you’re just having standard single-pass sessions. 

In addition to being a lengthy process, laser tattoo removal can be rather costly. Our studio offers some of the best laser tattoo removal prices in the Washington-Baltimore area, and we run deals regularly to make it more affordable for our clients. Without a discount or deal, our clients pay $72/session to remove a tattoo that’s 2”-squared or smaller. A 4”-squared tattoo costs $144/session to remove, and we charge $15/sq. in. for every inch over 4”. Like I said, though, we run deals for 40-50% off regularly, and many other studios and med spas do the same, so definitely look around for deals before starting the laser tattoo removal process.

If you’re interested in having a tattoo removed, I highly recommend going to a facility that uses a RevLite® SI laser, which is the gold standard in laser tattoo removal technology and what we use here at The Studio at Painful Pleasures. 

An alternative to laser tattoo removal would be to have a cover-up tattoo done by an artist who specializes in cover-ups. Sometimes artists will ask a client to have 2-3 sessions of laser tattoo removal first, to lighten their tattoo and make the cover-up more successful. Depending on the size and colors of your current tattoo and what you would want your cover-up design to look like, pre-lightening may not be necessary, though.

Tattoo Removal - Now It's Getting Easier With a New Tattoo Ink

The attitude of young people towards getting tattoos has changed with laser tattoo removal, and due to the development of new tattoo inks that are much easier to remove. Now young people getting tattoos are of the opinion that their body art is not necessarily forever. Some hard core ink collectors have opted for laser removal to make room for new tattoos. It gives a whole new meaning to the term temporary tattoos.

Tattoo regrets are very common. We are a society that makes decisions on the fly. Life moves fast and sometimes we move too fast and make the wrong decision. The American Academy of Dermatology reports that business of laser treatment is growing every year. A large percentage of people with at least one tattoo are interested in getting tattoo removal. You may be surprised to hear that some of these feelings of regret surface within the first week of acquiring the tattoo!

At one time, drastic measures such as dermabrasion were the only means available for removing tattoos. Now we have the advantages of laser treatment as well as a new type of ink that is easier to remove than traditional tattoo ink used in years past. The ink is made by storing dye in microscopic capsules. If left alone, the tint will be as permanent as any regular tattoo ink. But if you get a tattoo with this special ink, it can be removed in a single laser treatment. Cutting down on the number of visits will likely save you hundreds and possibly thousands of dollars.

With laser treatment a beam of parallel light delivers energy into the skin. The tattoo ink then absorbs the light. The ink then breaks up into very tiny particles which are then carried off by your body's lymphatic system. The feeling to the client is more of a vibration rather than the feeling of heat. The sensation is described as being similar to having a rubber band snapped against your skin. The process is unpleasant but tolerable in short durations.

If you go for laser removal, it is typical to need about 6-8 visits for an average size tattoo. With the healing time required in between - that is usually 6-8 weeks - you can see how the entire process will require quite a bit of time to complete the process. This makes this new tattoo ink look very attractive. We'll just have to see if the quality of the ink holds up over time.

Laser removal has become the most appropriate treatment as it is low-risk, bloodless, and most effective method with fewer side effects. Generally, the type of laser used depends upon the pigment colors. For many people, several treatment sessions are required.

Dermabrasion: During this technique, your surgeon sands the skin to remove the top and middle layers of the tattoo. The combination of surgical and dressing techniques may help to increase and absorb the ink.

Surgical excision: Surgery involves tattoo removal using a scalpel and closes the wound the stitches. This method proved highly effective with some tattoos and allows your surgeon to remove inked regions with greater control.

Also there are few side effects with these methods, such as skin discoloration at the treated area, infection at the site, some scarring, or lack of total pigment removal. Complete removal of tattoos is not always possible and you need to undergo multiple treatments to get the maximum benefits. It requires different laser wavelengths to remove a multicolored tattoo because of selective absorption characteristic of tattoo pigment.
