it's so funny i knew i was gonna be insane about it so i fr WAS FIGHTING IT for months before i finally caved. this fandom really has me multishipping on premium ELITE levels never experienced before.

thing about remmick right, thing about remmick is that he's not only a foil but a mirror to these characters- he reflects and inverts them, which makes him so malleable as a narrative device.

there's sammie, of course. but the way he's trapped between worlds, unable to move on, almost evokes annie to me. there's mary who is an insider being forced out while remmick is an outsider trying to force his way in, stack starts off as a boundary breaking idealist and remmick inverts him by being a similar type of transgressive character, a 'corrupted idealist' if you will (*cough* cursed money *cough*)- and stack is his heir, literally ending the movie slamming money on the table.

and then THERE'S SMOKE. the guard dog and the wolf at the door. they're both victims and perpetrators of violence. i love how the same irish workshirt is used to visually code the THREE PATRIARCHS (jed wears one too). smoke's buttoned all the way up, starched collar, holsters at his side -that's his armour -and i love how it's contrasted with remmick's own undone one.

smoke's relationship with his own identity, respectability and his own repression is one of the most interesting things about him as a character to me. the thing about remmick is that he UNRAVELS smoke. he's his catalyst, smoke's entire character arc happens BECAUSE of him.

i think the aspect of 'monstrosity' that the movie explores finds home in them both; their daddy's curse follows smoke and stack from place to place, makes them ostracised even within black communities, much like remmick who exists between the dead and the living, they also exist between worlds in a way.

there's something really compelling about the monster that took everything from you, that destroyed everything you fought so hard to protect, fundamentally understanding something about you because they were you once. because both of you thought you could climb your way to freedom by playing a system designed to crush you.
