Imagine Ren and Poe talking about what Ren did to Poe, either fighting or just talking about it because that helps Poe cope, and Poe talks about how horrible it was and just sort of off hand "do you have any idea what it feels like to have someone rip your mind apart?" And Ren just very calmly "Yes, I do." Poe goes silent because he never considered Ren had learned that trick first hand from his Master.

Not that it excuses what he does, and Ren isn’t saying that to gain sympathy.

But yes, he knows what it feels like to have someone ripping his mind apart. He knows what it’s like to be completely taken out of his body and have something else shoved in, and he also knows what it feels like to have dark fingers curling and poisoning his thoughts slowly.
