Tongues of Fire - Chapter 39

I feel like it’s been such a long wait for this update that streams of apologies don’t even do it justice, so I’m just going to say it once: I’m sorry for such a delay!

But at long last here is the penultimate chapter of Tongues of Fire, and if you’re still with me all this time later I can’t even express how grateful I am ^.^

We’re so close to the end of the adventure, and it’s been a long, emotional road. I hope you enjoy reading this update as much as I enjoyed writing it! Thoughts are appreciated, as always <3

“I’ve picked up a few things.” It was jarring at first, having a full crew onboard the Waverider but they had proved themselves to be an interesting bunch, and it wasn’t long before Gideon found herself learning from each one of them. She used this knowledge to help them better achieve their goals.

“I am always here for advice, Captain.” She wondered what it was that perplexed him so, humans were funny creatures. “There are no stupid questions.”

Gideon always was there, wasn’t she? Rip smiled slightly at the comfort, even if in the end he found himself pushing his hands into the pockets of his coat as his shoulders drew tighter together. “Was reassurance always part of your protocol?” he asked, half-joking, but it was good to hear all the same-- perhaps more so given the fact that Gideon echoed all around him in a voice like a blanket. “I just...”

There was no point beating around the bush with her.

“I’ve been thinking about leaving,” he said, his tone a bit softer as he did. “For all the comfort that your calling me Captain will always be, we both know that hasn’t been the case on this ship, with this crew, in a long time.

“I fear my usefulness has run its course.” He chuckled, the sound as awkward as Rip felt. “And I wonder if it’s right for me to remain here.”

Oliver’s first experience on the wave rider was that of absolute amazement. He’d gone through portals before, even a pod once when he ended up at the Phantom Zone with Clark, but never a space ship. Well, he’d been corrected earlier by Kara --time ship. But it was still pretty incredible. He wasn’t sure what he could bring to the group, but he was glad to be part of the action. 

Kara introduced him to the group but was called away to find another Superman. In fact, what was once a full ship, was now almost a ghost town. He decided to walk around to get his feel for the place before he was asked to help. Upon going through one of the rooms, he found someone tinkering on a device, that piqued his interest. Oliver couldn't help but walk in. “Excuse me...” he put one hand in his pocket while the other scratched his chin. “Are you infusing ionic energy into that....device?” he asked curiously. “Fascinating,” he observed. “I’m Oliver..”

"Please tell me you didn’t invite the entire crew to our place for New Year’s?” Lois looked a little panicked. “It’s not that I mind, but a little heads up would have been nice. I mean, it’s a holiday. Everything is closed. You can’t even get decent takeout. What am I gonna feed these people?”

The Waverider was decked out for New Year’s Eve and as Nora walked into the kitchen, she frowned. “Exactly which New Year are we celebrating?” Considering they were currently in the time stream, that remained to be seen. “You do realize this is just an excuse for Mick to drink more booze, right?”

Flynn frowned for a moment. He was in full-on panic mode, but his brain was also working overtime to find a way out of this. Taking Eve’s hand in his, he locked eyes with her, silently communicating the need for her to trust him. Then, he jumped right through the solid wall. He had fortunately had with him an artifact that when worn would allow him to pass through solid barriers. He’d been examining it earlier, before their mission, when he’d gotten distracted. “Let’s go rescue our friends.”
