boy sits on the window-ledge with his legs over the edge and the whole world at his feet.

talks on the phone.

she's on the other side of it all in someplace only god knows but right now let's say that she's here and she's with him, her voice in his ears and his heart in her hands. he keeps his back turned and leans his body out into the night sky and maybe somewhere she’s doing the same under a different set of stars, reaching for him in a city that never sleeps.

traffic drowns out the sounds of whatever he’s saying to her, leaves it something secret they can call their own. the air is hot and swimming with it so we’re all gasping for breath but he still whispers in a stream, maybe he’s confessing that he loves her and the words flow easy, maybe not.

same time every night. 

silence until the sun sets and dusk settles over the heat in ashy violet and grey, he smiles for her and waits quietly for the moon to swell in the sky, for them to be alone together. absence makes the heart grow fonder.

(i have never seen him love so softly.)
